Gauss Cannons

Hey, I've been looking at the different ways you can upgrade your Gauss Cannons, and a couple things in the research tree I'm not sure contribute to their actual damage:
(see http://www.clansofsin.com/techtree/tec/2 for the online research trees)

Ferro-Uranite Rounds
increases damage for autocannon weapons
Advanced Ballistics
increases damage for autocannon weapons
Highly Conductive Rails
increases range for Gause cannons

Highly Conductive Rails requires the previous two skill researched first, but I dont think autocannon weapons are actually used by Gause Cannons. When i look at the .entity files they say the weapon of Gause cannons are Projectile and Gause type, meanwhile the autocannon weapon looks to be flak-like ships

so if this is the case, why would the game require researching an upgrade to autocannon weapons as a pre-req for the Gause cannon upgrade? or am i wrong, and Gause cannons actually do use autocannons?

Thanks!

You may be over thinking this, but just for sake of argument lets say that one technology depends on another being developed.

Sometimes new techs have side effect uses and the Gauss Cannons benefit from new Auto Cannon developments.

In other words, tech can have other uses besides what they were developed for.

Probably just storyline/setting decision. Maybe they wanted to imply that Gauss Cannons come from Autocannons. No other reason, I would think. It is Sci-Fi, after all. Probably just a design decision.

End of quote

'Design decision' and 'storyline decision' are not the same thing. ;)

Giving a tech prerequisite techs makes it more expensive, and thus has an impact on game balance. I doubt the devs would have made the decision simply for fiction purposes.

so to clarify,

the prereq requirements we're talking about that upgrade autocannons DO NOT enhance Gause Cannons at all, correct?

Possibly the highly conductive rails used in autocannon development, are made of a special alloy that is stronger than that of current gauss cannon alloys.

This would allow(strictly in a sci fi techie logical sense) gauss cannons to upgrade to this newer metal alloy which is able to withstand higher pressures and forces allowing the gauss to add more pressure and force to the shell within the cannon..thus making it travel further when the energies are released at firing time....

Just a thought.
