You're playing campaign mode. You have to play in Quick play mode to control who you play against.

Play through the "Quick Play" mode. There you'll have full control over all the aspects of the game, as well as who you'll be playing against.

Campaign Mode sets you up automatically with your opponents, and lets you unlock the more powerful candidates available in the game.

What is the difference between campaign and quick play besides choosing who you run against? I dont want to get stuck playing a "lite" version of the game just so i can avoid running against a VERY unrealistic opponent. Thanks

The campaign mode is where you play against increasingly difficult candidates on your way up. Each time you win, you unlock a new candidate to play in quick play mode.

The campaign mode is like a campaign in most strategy games. You have a series of missions.  In TPM, these missions/levels are playing against various candidates.
