Any Tactics ...

So I have been toying with whether or not to buy this game - I love Space Operas but I hate RTS' ... tough call

Anyway I understand the Diplomacy needs a bit of tweaking (particularly with being given Impossible diplomatic missions that costs you relationship status), so am hoping that gets fixed in the update.

What I would like to know now is ... are there any tactics involved in the actual battles or is it pretty much like all the other 4X games out there ... who ever brings the most firepower wins. Period. I.e. The outcome of any battle is pretty much a forgone conclusion.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated

It is an RTS, but it feels very 4x-ish, particularly in the pacing. I can play 95% of the game completely zoomed out viewing the entire solar system at once, and walk away from the computer for minutes at a stretch and just listen for any alarming audio cues (which is why I asked for the ability to change the speed in-game, to speed through those times, and I think that request is being granted in the next patch, thanks Devs =) ). I've only briefly played with multiple systems, and I think I'd need to zoom to an individual system fairly often because there's *very* little individual planet info available from the multiple-system zoom level for obvious reasons.

Dano I assure you that, with some experience, you will find battles to require quite a bit of tactic and decision making (if thats what you prefer, you can of course leave it to the AI)

I remember a beta 4 game (I know its outdated, but the main mechanic is intact so let me finish my story) anyways I remember a beta 4 game in which I destroyed 4 (count them, 4!) of my opponent's capital ships even though I was constantly outmatched in terms of number. in the process of the whole 20 minute long extended battle I lost a handful of frigs and ONE, just ONE capital of my own. frankly there was quite a bit of luck going into it, but also a lot of strategy.

the tactics are not like standard rtss however, they are more based on which ships you choose to attack, how you use the abilities on your capital ships and most importantly: knowing when to retreat.

The outcome of a battle is far from a foregone conclusion, though bringing the most firepower is a good idea. I've won many battles with a smaller fleet (just saved a game where I managed to defeat 24 disciple light frigates and a capital ship with 1 capital ship and 5 missile frigates).

There's as much tactic to the battle as you want. Some people micromanage their battles exclusively and they tend to get much higher kill to death ratios on their ships. I don't really do that too much, except when heavily outnumbered, though I do tend to give the ships a 'go over here and let the enemy come to you' or 'match right into their midst and destroy them' order to start out with.

Thanks for the info ... this seems to be a remarkable game indeed. I was thinking it was going to be warcraft with spaceships *Shudder*

Nah, the days of Star Trek: Armada are long gone.
