Ship Design Ideas for the Devs

I completely agree with the Devs on excluding the ship designer feature from this game. It would have no place in a fast-paced RTS.
However, why not have an out-of-game designer application? Players could use the feature to create their own designs (a la GC2) and save them for use in the game itself. I think it could add quite the extra dimension to the core strategy. Perhaps this idea could be realized in a future update?

P.S.
Cheers to the team for making such a great game, I've always had great respect for your involvement with the community and excellent support that you provide post-launch.

Actually what would have been neat was to allow for the intigration of custom ships from gal Civ II into Sins.

Any options you don't have to be rich to afford? ;) (3D Studio MAX I was able to find only one mention of a price anywhere, and that was second-hand claiming $3000, and Cinema 4D is $1795. Not to mention the books or training in 3D modeling required for either.)

I was mainly trying to point out that asking for a ship editor is not the same thing as asking for a 3d modelling program, most of which cost money to buy and training to use. Otherwise, GalCiv2 would only be playable by 3D artists.

so will we be able to make our own custom ships?

Via modding and 3d modelling, yes. It's not a lego-like affair like in GC2, though--no in-game customization aside from choosing levelup abilities on capital ships.

Stardock has always been excellent at updating a game after its release. There's a good chance that if demand is high enough, we may see a ship design feature in future add-ons.

A 3D modeling program is not what I'm talking about at all. What I'm referring to is the sort of mechanic that was in Galactic Civilizations 2 (another excellent stardock game), albeit outside of the actual RTS game experience. The only problem I can see in integrating a thing like this is the possible advantage it may grant to players who choose to utilize it versus players who do not. Perhaps make it only cosmetic?

That sort of thing isn't really within Sins's scope, no.

I think it'd be nice just to be able to import GC2 models created with GC2's in-game ship designer into Sins. That'd be nice in a patch or expansion, or even a little $2 downloadable content like another company does.

I don't think GC2 and SotSE have similar enough visual styles to import ships from one to the other.
