anyone else besides me think this is stupid? their attempts to make claims wont be economically efficient for at least another 50 or so years, probably closer to a few centuries.

Denmark said scientists would embark Sunday on a monthlong expedition seeking evidence that the Lomonosov Ridge, a 1,240-mile underwater mountain range, is attached to the Danish territory of Greenland, making it a geological extension of the Arctic island.

That might allow the Nordic nation to stake a claim under a U.N. treaty that could stretch all the way the North Pole. Canada and Russia also claim the ridge.

and by that logic Turkey could claim the whole world (seeing as its all geological extensions of the same thing. not to mention, lets point out, the north pole is not a land mass. so, (in contradiction to my earlier statement) its the only part of the world that isnt a geological extension of the rest.

quote]Actually we the Russians hold claim over space since we were there first!!! [/quote]
yea true but if thats the case we get the moon and we were on mars first sooo

but i have nothing against russians, i live in an area with a lot of them, they are cool! esp the mobsters (LOL!)
yeah... if the "we got here first" rule applied, we would get almost all of the planets (and the sun!!!) as well as everything outside the solar system. after all, we got there first!!!
No, we did, we got to space first so we own everything in it. Anything else anyone claimed is thereby nulified by the fact that we already own it.

The Soviet Union was the first... they went bye-bye.... Russia has no claim as they were only "part" of the soviet government! so, that leaves America's claim to all of space... Now as for the moon, America claimed it in the name of all mankind, that makes us the administrators of the moon... so, we can build a base if we give ourselves permission to in the name of "all mankind"

Ya know, like the treaties we made with the Indians, "this is yours as long as the sun shimes and the moon glows in the sky, for as long as the fish swim and the wind blows and the rain falls, or 30 days, whichever comes first!

Excuese me, Russia WAS the Soviet Union. The other countries were more like slaves and buffer zones.

actually, Russia was a piece. a BIG piece, the dominating, enslaving asshole-of-a-dictator piece, but a piece nonetheless.

Technically Monkey's own Space since they were the first things up there from the earth, but then that is pretty short sighted thinking that there are no other cultures in space already meaning they already own "space" so we lose! And by the Monkey's owning space then in the same right the Polar Bears own the North pole, along with whatever other animals are up there, but I bet they would elect the Polar Bears to be their reps. Each country claiming some piece of the pie up there should immediately send a unarmed envoy up to discuss with the polar bears... if they don't return than we can assume the Polar bears are uninterested in giving up their oil.

Just because they are white does not mean they aren't interested in the black gold!

UMM I'm not totally sure but I think the Russians sent up a dog the first time.. we sent up the monkey... as for the polar bears, I dissagree, it should be the pink space ponies!

Ok,ive read all this quotes and technical answers and i think that you really have to plant your flag on something to claim it and space should be like internatinal waters, i mean planting you flag is tradition and all and thats the basic symbol of "this is mine and this is yours"

Yes, them and almost everyone else. People had money back then, they had property, now the government officials and people with American relations have everything while everyone else has to leave the country or go to Moscow to earn any decent money or living.

What about you, your pathetic excuese for a history textbook?

Yep, the British gained their entire empire with the clever use of flags.

I dont need a history textbook to tell you that people are not happy simply because they have property, and thats on the few bases that people actually had property to speak of!

emp you cannot say that your arguement here isnt biased, your parents probably lived in the best neighborhood in all of Russia because of their vital importance to the government.

I think it had more to do with the proper placement of guns.

ah yes, the great wealth of The Soviet Union, in the old days they had to build a wall in Berlin to keep us westerners from trying to crash their party. why the people had so much that we were braving gunfire and minefields, displacing whole lives and risking it all just to get into the soviet Union.

did you know that in the west we had to implement a policy of placing entire familys in jail and shooting the remaining family members of people who dared to defect to the soviet Union? I mean with all the great things that they had going for them that was the only way we could keep people from running into the arms of "Uncle Joe".

I know they had a problem with people trying to cross the border to get into there like the millions of people who flee the USA today on it's southern boarder!

Ah yes, the good old days of plenty Under the Bolshiveks. Now they really know how to run an empire!

Wrong.

Only party members were of any 'vital improtance' and even they got murdered in the streats. If we were to live in the best neighberhood then it would be Moscow, and let me tell you they only let their enemies and their best friends live there.

Yes, it was horrible what they did to some people, but what they did for the masses was amazing. People were educated, fed, clothed, and housed. And everyone was well qualified and most likely enjoyed what they did. The infrastructure allowed for expansion and growth as well as stability, cleanliness and splendor.

Now however things are braking down, populaion is declining, so is life expectancy, we have waitresses with physics degrees and garbage men who should be actors.

Now if your trying to sound sarcastic, stop it, your making a fool of yourself.

I am not saying many people would have liked to leave in search of what was out there, not to mention the families in Eastern Germany who were ripped appart by the Berlin Wall as well as being displaced, moved, intergrated, and well tortured. In a way we wanted our revenge on Germans, and in a way it was quite wrong and might have not been the smartest thing to do. If it wasnt for Stalin and his pathetic ego complex who knows what the Soviet Union might have become, or been. Lenin was the great one, Stalin was the fool, and so was everyone who came afterwords.

I dont tend to look much into the past, but there is one thing you do have to learn, nothing lasts, especially empires and super powers.

If he still lives in Russia, I can understand what he is saying.. Being that he has never traveled to the U.S.A. he does not realize how little they had back then as compared to how much we had and still have. I site a lyric from a song "he has an interstate running thru his front yard. Lord, he thinks, I have it so good!"

When you have alot, a little seems so small but when you have nothing a little looks like so much.

another example We had Nixon and felt we had so little, Now we have Bush and Nixon now looks so good!

No, I live in the US, and I would not go back to Russia for a couple of decades untill Democracy actually benifits the country, or we go back to a more socialistic system, whichever one comes first.

Its not that I dont like freedom, I like opportunity, and currently neither one has the amount of it I need.

This is not a knock on you, this is how I think; Socialism & communism are equal oppertunity enslavers of mankind.

I would suggest you read Ayn rand's Atlas shrugged. I grew up duing the cold war and had wondered what all the fuss was about. I read marx and trosky and others as well, I came to the conclution that to be a socialist (nazis and Itialy's fasist) or a communist was to support savery, slavery of all mankind.

If America were to have been a real friend to Russia and sent over tons of lawyers We could have helped them to get a jump start as a Democracy. America, as we seem to do all to often stayed out of it, and what a shame, Russia was never our enemy, they were rivals, and rivals when the dissagreement is over, should pick each other up and brush them off. We did not do this, much to our shame & loss.

I have read it, and any form of government enslaves people in a general sense. I would rather be a slave to a person though, then a slave to an object.

ah, to be 16 again and to think that all athority is bad...be careful there is an old quote that sums up political actions in a very basic way...

If you are not a domocrat when you are 20 you have no heart.
If you are not a republican when you are 40 you have no brain

My verison
If you think no Athority is good at 16, you think!
If you think no Athority is good at 40, your in jail!
