The Signs of the Times

What Signs of the Times do you see out there in our World? With Technology advancing with every blink of the eye, there are probably so many.

The idea for this article first came to my mind a few months ago, when I had to administer a standardized test to my students. Beginning this year, and in accordance with a new state school law, we were required to have students sign a form saying that they had “no media devices on their person” so as not to cheat.

It just struck me how weird it was to have to have 10 and 11 year olds sign a paper swearing they weren’t using texting, phone calls, phone internet, and instant messaging to cheat (parents were informed of this law beforehand, btw).

Anyway, this article idea came and went, but was brought back to mind when I read the other day that classic Monopoly would be replacing its well known colorful paper money with a Visa imprinted debit card. Talk about putting a new twist on and old game. Well, I guess it’s just mimicking real life, where the handling of cash occurs less and less everyday.

I also came upon a Sign of the Times story the other day about three men who were convicted of murder during a dispute over an Xbox...an Xbox! Others I could think of are the growing popularity of “man” purses, and one that my sweetie shared with me today, about British Open officials being upset at fans who took photos of Tiger via cellphones, trying to go around the rule of no cameras allowed.

I guess Signs of the Times are happening daily. If you don’t open your eyes to them a bit more, they might just pass you by. :)

And then the worst happens you find yourself saying things like - when I was a kid. When I was a kid there was no cartoon network or nickolodeon. No 24 hours of cartoons. When I was a kid we had to call our mom collect from the YMCA or the movies to come and pick us up - no cell phones. When I was a kid we didn't even have CD's or dvd's. And yes we played monopoly with pretend paper money - back in the old days.

I had attended that show,  "Body Worlds"  and it was made clear to everyone that no pictures were to be taken.

Now pictures have crept up on different sites, obviously some took pics anyway,  with the cellphones!

I think it's a shame kids have to have cellphones, Ipods, and most technology, instead of getting outside and participating in life.  It seems like the internet and other things have taken the place of going to the local malt shop, dancing....everything changes.

I find myself saying that, too. It makes me feel my age.
Kids nowadays even think a VCR is ancient. Students in my class were shocked several years ago when I told them I didn't own a DVD player...it was pretty funny and kinda sad, too (I own one now, btw).

I actually Do think technology is great...I look forward to all the advancements of it and what it will lead us to. However, I know what you mean. It seems as if there is no simplicity anymore.

I remember my daughter (now 23) getting very mad when she was told she would have to erase her Graphing Calculator (it did more than just calculate) if she wanted to bring it to a test.  We had slide rules when I was her age!  No need to erase them (then they would have been useless. )

It is amazing when I think about how technology has changed in my life time.

When I was a kid we had land line phones, no wireless...three channels on tv...abc,nbc,cbs....and I even had a black and white tv! hahahahahaha.

My kids have never even seen one.

There were no VCR's and the biggest piece of electronic equipment in our living room was the stereo...it was huge! With a record player sitting on the top.

Living large!

I love technology and can hardly wait to see what is coming next. I think I've embraced it because I grew up a fan of such television shows as Star Trek. Seeing things like compact discs capable of storing large amounts of data and mobile phones which look very much like the Trek communicators excite me.

I read something recently about kids in an Australian school who had been caught cheating using mobile phone to text each other messages. Sure beats writing the answers out on the palm of one's hand, don't it?
