I didnt think that was funny

You may have heard about it in the news. The new museum of tribal arts in Paris (Musée du Quay Branly) was inaugurated on June 20 by the President Chirac. To participate to the inauguration, a chief of a Vanuatu Island (Tanna), came all the way from his village to France to present the President with a totem that was crafted by his people. I dont really remember the meaning of the totem, but I remember that the gift represents the gratitude of the people of Tanna to the French government for honoring their culture and the culture of many other countries.

I thought it was really nice, that this chief who had never left his island home made the trip all the way to France for this special event.

And here the french just disappoint me once more. There was a talk show last night and they showed this picture:

And they made fun of it. The host was asking to the other guests who they thought was on the picture and they were saying stupid things, they even said that it must have been the first prime minister Jacques Chirac ever had (Mr Jospin), who came back from his village after years of hiding. And everyone burst out laughing.

I didnt think it was funny.

I found it offensive that they thought they could use the chief Laukalbi to moke the ex Prime Minister. As if he wasnt good enough, as if they could bring down the ex prime minister by comparing him to a tribal chief. They were all laughing.

I felt as if my heart was stung. There cant be any comparison between them two. One was a Prime Minister in France a few years ago. And the other is a chief in an island 22.000kms away. How can they link the two and find it funny???

I really hate the froggy humour sometimes.

The chief of Vanuatu Island Tanna can always invite Chirac to Tanna next February to lead the parade and offer prayers on Jon Frum Day

And France thinks of itself as the cultural sensitive capitol of the world. Bah!

Heh, cant really see why they'd do that? But thats a thought.

And France thinks of itself as the cultural sensitive capitol of the world. Bah!

The problem with a lot of French people is this arrogant attitude they have, and this superiority complex they have shoved up their bum. Otherwize they'd be a great cultural capital (if that can ever exist?).

Yup, sad to say but true!

I think so too, very disrespectful. They should know better being a tv show and having a big audience at 06.00pm...

I really hate it a lot.  I was especially upset when they decided to compare Pope Benedict XVI to Hitler.  The French are gauche.  Sometimes I wish I could hide my roots.

Oh that's just awful. It's just a shame that stupid people can get to us like that.

The French always posed as being very open-minded about aboriginal races. If you take your average American history course in the US you'll hear about how we were all mean to the American Indians but the French were kind and caring to them.

In reality they weren't. They played them against one another, hired them as pawns to do their fighting for them, and since they'd screw anything that moved, "traded" for as many of the women as the tribe could afford to spare. In the end you didn't see the noble French coming to their aid when they needed help.

The French are the same abusive imperialists as any other European nation. A lot of our problems in North Africa and Southeast Asia came from their incompetant imperialism and abuse of the people there. Now they whine about American imperialism while the snub yet another aboriginal leader.

Anyway, they are sooooo 200 years ago. The fact anyone considers a nation with the GDP and population of California to be a "world power" is silly, in my opinion.

I couldnt have said it better myself.

I hate the fact that they think they know things better than others and that it entitles them to make fun of others. They really shouldnt talk shit when they have so many social problems due to mistreatment of old colonies. Bunch of suckers......

I guess they have no idea what being politically correct means.

I kept forgetting to tell you Em, I saw your beautiful island featured a couple of weeks ago on the Discovery Channel here in the US. It was very enlightening and very interesting. My kids and I watched it and I was proud to say I know someone from that island, they were impressed! They just talked about the island's origin and what they people are doing to become more modern and such.

I dont usually like the term politically correct because most of the times it's used for stupid things, like not calling a cat a cat, lol!

But in this case, it was really of bad taste...

REALLY?? How exciting!!!!

Ah ok. Well they arent really doing much to get more modern, in the islands i mean. But the capital is making alot of efforts. It must have been interesting to watch indeed, I always like to see how Vanuatu is perceived by other countries, sometimes it's so wrong, lol!
