*Unofficial* Test Build to address 1.1 Memory/Save Game/Crash issues

*Unofficial* Test Build to address 1.1 Memory/Save Game/Crash issues

If you have Windows 2000 or XP you can try this UNOFFICIAL test exe. I will be updating this link periodically until we get the official update out.  I'm using an newer version of the DirectX SDK on my computer than the one that Brad uses to create the offical builds, and the version I'm using is not supported on Win 98/ME.

Before extracting the contents of the zip file to your GalCiv2 install folder, backup your GalCiv2.exe and Lib3D.dll and your save games, just in case.

http://sd.stardock.com/carielf/gc2/GalCiv2MemTestWinXP13.zip

If you get an error about missing D3DX9_28.dll, here is a link to that file in a zip, which can be extracted to your GalCiv2 directory:

http://sd.stardock.com/carielf/d3dx928.zip

This test file is meant to

1) fix crash when loading save games

2) reduce save/load times (may only be slight difference)

3) make it less likely to crash while saving.

4) This version attempts to abort saving rather than just crashing when it runs out of memory while saving.  However, it is still possible to max out your memory so badly that the game will crash even if you're not saving.

5) You may get a few missing strings because I'm not including any data files with the exe.

6) If anyone has been having the bug where the Metaverse submit dialog does not pop up at the end of a game, please let me know if you have that problem with this build, as I may have fixed this problem.

7) I took out some unused debugging code that may have caused slowdowns.

8) Fixed a random crash when you or the AI would colonize a planet whose surface had not been initialized.

9) Build 10 has the changes to the combat reverted back to the old system.

10) We also fixed a bug in the planet surface code caused by a timing issue; if you colonized the planet before it was initialized, it would fail to create the initial colony and then crash.

11) I fixed a few bugs in our resource manager.

12) Reverted the code that calculated the total number of stars  (based on the number of sectors) to the version in 1.0X2.  This will also affect the number of planets.  This should save a lot of memory and increase performance.

In task manager on the process tab, select View and then Select Columns.  Add the column Virtual Memory Size.  That way, you can see how much RAM GC2 is using and how much Virtual Memory.

I think that the latest change (less stars and planets) will be enough for an update to 1.1, but we did find other areas where we can decrease memory and/or increase performance that we can try to get into 1.2.

Please report here with results on if your problems were solved, if there are new bugs, etc.  If you've been playing with simpler ship designs, turning down the stars, etc, feel free to turn everything up again to abuse the test exe.

I am in favor of the new system. The first attack advantage was way too powerful.

Sorry, that was a type-o. Don't worry your ships won't fire on themselves

I've fixed the problem that was bouncing out of the battles too early.

Yes, it was absurd that a battle could start, and ships would not get a chance to fire even once.

This build is much more stable. I'm going to upgrade all my ships to a ridiculously-jewelried design, see what happens...

Cari do we get another beta zip with CC's improvement in it??

Yes. Test 9 is up.

I also fixed a small memory leak when saving xml files.

for once i will just wait for the final version to be released.I dont think i can handle starting a game and losing all my data again now.Last 2 times ive had the memory issue i ant bin able to open up my last save game
Reply #33 Top
It's the opposite for me right now: I've been able to open standard 1.1 saves with the new builds that seemed broken before.
It might be worth a try if you still have "broken" saves.
It would be nice if the game asked you what to do after each round of combat. Another round? Retreat? Continue without asking?

But of course, the AI would have to be aware of this too.

I wouldn't call it a draw if both sides die completely. Rather, a Pyrrhic victory.

My game is running a good 200MB under the previous amounts. Great improvement. In fact, I havn't had a chacnce to play long enough to get it over the 2GB mark again. Of course, that doesn't tell me if it is still going to crash or not. Thanks for the great support! Cari - you da woman!

I was about to quite this game forever, but not now! My wife is going to kill you!!

I had crashes every two turns, and finally couldn't load the game at all..... all fixed with this patch!! Freekin' great work man. We inform if there are any problems!!

Thanks

Very bad combat bug now.

My 5 ships versus enemy 10 ships and I attack first.
Luckily my ships are way overpowered.

Round 1
5 shots killing 5 enemy.
10 Return fire - no dmg to my ships.

Round 2
2 shots killing 2 enemy.
10 Return fire - no dmg.

Round 3
1 shot killing 1 enemy.
10 Return fire - no dmg

Round 4
1 shot killing 1 enemy
10 Return fire - no dmg

Round 5
1 shot killing 1 enemy.
10 Return fire - no dmg.

Now since all enemy ships are dead, battle ends with.
My ships shot 10 times.
Enemy shot 50 times.

Now this is the way to let the AI cheat in Painful!
Not a new game, loaded from ongoing v1.1 game after using this patch file.

The loaded game set all areas not viewable but explored to a covered fog of war instead of the fog of war view of an explored area.

Did another battle just to be sure...

My 6 ships versus 9 ships.

Round 1
6 shots kill 6 enemy.
9 return fire -> my lead ship hit

Round 2
2 shots kill 2 enemy
9 return fire -> no dmg

Round 3
1 shot kill 1 enemy
9 return fire -> no dmg

End of battle all 9 destroyed.
My ships fired 9 shots
Enemy fired 27.

Attacker gets all shots in round 1
Gets 2 shots no matter what on round 2.
Gets 1 shot after that until enemy ships are destroyed.

I'm going to check if its the same for comp attacking.

Anyone else having this issue?

-- Doesn't that, pretty much, destroy the whole advantage of being the attacker

- Yes, it destroys the whole advantage of being the attacker (except the decision to initiate combat or not).

ROFL..... There goes my ENTIRE combat strategy.

Jesus, I can't wait to try this on the Dread Lords. If I thought the battles were bloody before.......
How does this work exactly, in the combat viewer? Are all the ships firing at the same time since it would be a little weird if the defending ships damage the attacking ships after they had exploded?
Go figure. I figured it would happen and it did.

Here is the debug.err. It crashes consistantly when doing more than 1 or 2 Control-N's.
I just hate being backed into a corner, you know? And i always seem to end up there more times than not.

1.1 was so stable for me. Very few crashes, fewer than any other build. I'll let you know if it crashes more in-game, once I get that far. I really want to try out the new combat mode.

It seems that even if I go to Menu and select New Game it will crash after I have gone through all the setup screens and it starts to load the new game. I have to actually exit to the desktop to start fresh if I don't want it to crash.
Well, this is not working very well on my computer.
This time I had a nice 300% research bonus tile on my home world, so I bought a Xeno Lab, set up some stuff to build, and went on to colonize my first planet. A nice class 17 one star over. As soon as the ship got there, the game crashed.

I had upped my swap file from 128MB to 768MB, by the way, just to see if that would make a difference. I was able to Control-N a little more after I increased the swap file, but the max was 2, then it crashed on the third attempt. As you can see by the debug, I didn't do it this time.

Guess I'll go back to the original 1.1 for now.
Darn, I really wanted to try out that new combat.

By the way, post #24 links to Test 8, which is the one I was using because it was further down and mentioned an updated .exe.

Then I noticed the mention further down about Test 9, and noticed that I was on Test 8.

So I checked the link in post 1 and found it to link to Test 9.

I downloaded Test 9 and tried it.

Same thing happens with Test 9 with a Control-N. The first time I tried the game crashed. The debug.err is identical to the first debug.err I posted except for the test build #, so I didn't take up more space by posting it.

Moose: I havn't been able to reproduce this crash. When you get a chance, could you install "SmartException" from SDCentral and run that program while reproducing the crash? That will give us some more detailed info that should help us stomp this one out.

SOrry for the problems...we'll try and get your game up and running ASAP

When I click Generate Exception I get the message - SDCZip is missing - and no zip file is produced in the ZippedExceptions folder, only the mailinfo.txt file.

I'm having the same CTD even after going back to desktop to start a new game instead of using CTRL-N. SEZip and Debug.err sent. Now it will not run any game more than 5-10 turns before CTD. I've re-installed Test9 and still get the same result. Going to put 1.1 back on and see if it will go back to running then put Test9 back on.

Close the program and restart it from the stat menu. There appears to be an issue with starting it from SDC as i had the same problem. works fine if you start it independantly though.
