*Unofficial* Test Build to address 1.1 Memory/Save Game/Crash issues

*Unofficial* Test Build to address 1.1 Memory/Save Game/Crash issues

If you have Windows 2000 or XP you can try this UNOFFICIAL test exe. I will be updating this link periodically until we get the official update out.  I'm using an newer version of the DirectX SDK on my computer than the one that Brad uses to create the offical builds, and the version I'm using is not supported on Win 98/ME.

Before extracting the contents of the zip file to your GalCiv2 install folder, backup your GalCiv2.exe and Lib3D.dll and your save games, just in case.

http://sd.stardock.com/carielf/gc2/GalCiv2MemTestWinXP13.zip

If you get an error about missing D3DX9_28.dll, here is a link to that file in a zip, which can be extracted to your GalCiv2 directory:

http://sd.stardock.com/carielf/d3dx928.zip

This test file is meant to

1) fix crash when loading save games

2) reduce save/load times (may only be slight difference)

3) make it less likely to crash while saving.

4) This version attempts to abort saving rather than just crashing when it runs out of memory while saving.  However, it is still possible to max out your memory so badly that the game will crash even if you're not saving.

5) You may get a few missing strings because I'm not including any data files with the exe.

6) If anyone has been having the bug where the Metaverse submit dialog does not pop up at the end of a game, please let me know if you have that problem with this build, as I may have fixed this problem.

7) I took out some unused debugging code that may have caused slowdowns.

8) Fixed a random crash when you or the AI would colonize a planet whose surface had not been initialized.

9) Build 10 has the changes to the combat reverted back to the old system.

10) We also fixed a bug in the planet surface code caused by a timing issue; if you colonized the planet before it was initialized, it would fail to create the initial colony and then crash.

11) I fixed a few bugs in our resource manager.

12) Reverted the code that calculated the total number of stars  (based on the number of sectors) to the version in 1.0X2.  This will also affect the number of planets.  This should save a lot of memory and increase performance.

In task manager on the process tab, select View and then Select Columns.  Add the column Virtual Memory Size.  That way, you can see how much RAM GC2 is using and how much Virtual Memory.

I think that the latest change (less stars and planets) will be enough for an update to 1.1, but we did find other areas where we can decrease memory and/or increase performance that we can try to get into 1.2.

Please report here with results on if your problems were solved, if there are new bugs, etc.  If you've been playing with simpler ship designs, turning down the stars, etc, feel free to turn everything up again to abuse the test exe.

I think that it's only recently that our mail server has started filtering out e-mail with no text in the body.  I think that it also might not like e-mails with no subjects.
Yeah, that is what the autoemail said. Sorry about resending it in a reply. As normal, I wasn't thinking. As mentioned above, I'm running fine with the new fixes. Anyway, now I know if I have to submit anything again that both the subject and body has to have something in it.

I jus want to chime in here and thank everyone for their assistance in trying to get this problem sorted out. According to the poll, we figure that around 15-20% of players are getting memory issues related to 1.1, so your assistance (and bravery in using our beta executables) is greatly appreciated!

I also want to give a virtual pat-on-the-back to Cari and Jesse, who have tirelessly hunted down these issues and been able to fix them at a rate my simple artist mind can't comprehend.

Anyways, thanks to everyone involved! Now everyone can truly enjoy the new update without...you know...fatal system crashes and stuff

Ok, a final build for today: 13.

We changed the code that calculates the total number of stars (based on the galaxy size) back to the way it was for 1.0X.2 because the more stars you have, the more planets you have, and the more planets you have, the more memory you take up.

There are a few other areas where we can probably improve peformance and/or decrease memory usage, but this is a good start and we can make sure that this is a solid build before making any further changes.

Thanks to all Stardockies for their fantastic customer support on this and many other matters!!

Now get Pat working on the weird allignment colors here in the Metaverse
Grey = Neutral.... Not Very Good

I would also like to thank people for their constant feedback, which has helped as I make progress in the quest to fix the technical issues with 1.1.

Using build 12, at the end of the game when I hit the Quit button the system locked solid. I had to power down.
In this game I had just defeated the Yor, and did a final alliance with the Drengin for an Alliance Victory.

But I see that build 13 is up, always my lucky number. So this may well be a moot point, at this point. I'll try out build 13 now.

You do know it is a Saturday, right?
Working overtime on this?
If so, y'all are even more awsome.

Build 12 fixed my problems. I'm playing on a ginormous map, and can once again save. (Load and save times are now lightning fast!) Four straight hours, zero CTD. I'll try build 13 tomorrow.

Thanks for all the work--on a weekend!

Is there an e-mail address that we can send the SmartException reports to for these test builds? The last time I just sent it to support@stardock.com, but it suggested that I should send it to bugs@stardock.com the next time. I think that was the address though.

Anyway, can I just send it to either one or is there a more specific one that it should go to?
So far no problems with build 13.
My mem usage got up to 1.5GB, which seems like a little less than before. The last couple full games were 1.6 and 1.8, going back. All were played on the huge map with 8 other races, myself as Custom (the mighty and powerful Meese, of course).

Lucky 13!

Even with all the crash problems I've had with the game I still love the guys and gals at Stardock with all my heart and I want to have their beta's.

Because there was talk about memory managment, garbage collection in C/C++ and lack of such in the old topic, well:

I don't know why every single programmer I know just overlooks the god damn Boehm-Demers-Weiser Garbage Collector.

I found out, that the more I see the slower the framerate it gets. I start a game and I have in average 30 FPS. But after I either build several ships with 15 parsecs scanner range or I build "eyes of the universe" achievment, the FPS drops to less then 10. On a medium map at end of the game I am finishing with having 3 FPS in average and all this is with anti-aliasing turned off. Also I found out the more of the galaxy is visible, the more memory the game eats up, though I never have a problem with it. (I have 1 GB RAM).
Am I the only one who gets this when quitting the game? Happens with all versions..

Have you installed and run (not from SDC though) SmartException??

If you have please send the zipped exception it generates to gc2bugs@stardock.com and set the topic to 'CTD on quit game'.
That way CariElf or one of the other devs. can take a look and see exactly what is the cause of the CTD for you and hopefully fix the issue.

Where is the link for build 13?. Thanks.
First post

The link there changes with each new build that is done.

JustNuts,

Is this happening on build 13 as well? If you havn't tried it, just use the link at the top post. Also, could you try bringing down the resolution to see if that's being problem.

Otherwise, if you could install smartException and send the log to gc2bugs@stardock.com, we'll look into your issues ASAP.

Thanks!

On build 13 the game seems to have forgotton what "common" and "uncommon" mean.

I keep getting lots of stars with 5 PQ0 planets, or 4 PQ0 and one PQ5, and a few with 4 PQ0 and 1 PQ7 or PQ8, and maybe 1-3 that actually have a decent planet (PQ10-17, with anything over 12 extremely rare), while habitable planets are set to common and planet and star occurrence and both set to uncommon, which almost never happened before this update. It used to be that I would get 2-3 times as many useful planets, and the average PQ was 2-3 higher. It didn't seem unusual at first, but when this happened consistently for more than 20 games in a row I began to get a little perturbed.
