I like Minor races!

In one of my games, I was Drengin and the first system I explored had the Dark Yor in it. We became instant buddies and trading partners. As the game progressed, I noticed their research was doing very well and I was able to buy most anything tech-wise from them.
My economy was booming so I researched straight thru beam weapons and picked up nearly ALL defense tech from the Dark Yor.
Soon, I went full EVIL and got the Psyonic Beam. WOW. It kicks @$$...! About that time I was out-teching my lil' buddies and decided it was time to "persuade" them to join my empire and "liberate" their class 15 planet.

I'll miss our little chit-chats but they will be remembered as I use our combined techs to cut up the other goodie-two-shoes who poison the galaxy with their weakness.

Actually, it's much better to keep that one guy that you can easily protect around all game and buy everything from him and send all your trade routes to him too, then build a ton of eco-trade boosting starbase on the way and you're set for life (Don't worry, he'll use that money to buy more tech from the other players, which you can then buy off of him for dirt cheap - I like to do this instead of whoring tech). Unless your galaxy is so small and planets are so few that a PQ 15 planet would change everything, it would be much better to just start killing other people first.

Yeah man! I for sure know what you mean. Besides being useful trading parters, they're just cool buddies to have around. "Hey Arcean, what you and your Terran buddies doing? Conquering the Drengin? Yeah, well check out my MINI RACE!" Thats way cooler than obliterating the Drengin.

In my experience, tech trading with minor races is a great strategy in the short game, but in the long haul I find I out-pace them in research to such an extent that they become useless as trading partners. For my purposes, I like to keep them around long enough for them to build at least two capitals before I annex them; you can only build one of each capital yourself, but there is no rule against "liberating" multiple caps from other races.

It would be interesting to be able to control or subjugate a civilization without taking it over. Using their innate racial bonuses to your advantage. Like having a minor world in your territory who does your research, in return for your protection, or maybe at a threat from your Drengin enforcers. More than once I've taken over a planet wishing that I could have just enslaved it's population somehow. Sortof off topic, but interesting to think about.
