Whats the point of custom portraits?

Whats the point if you are playing AS the custom race

I created a custom portrait for a race I wanted to create and started a game as them and it suddenly hit me. Do you ever actually see your own portrait during a game?
I cant recall ever seeing it.

So is there any real point to making a custom portrait, other than changing the ones of the default races to ones that you prefer.
Or is it just to make you feel better that your portrait matches your race (even though you dont see it)

Purely astetics. Like the extra moduales you put on ships, doesn't actually change anything, but it makes it more personal.

How? As the first poster already wrote, you never see your own portrait in the game, do you?

Good question... Although I only put 10 minutes or so into my custom portrait I found myself asking "why did i do that?".

Still, I use them for the minor races now.

Yeah, it would be interesting if you saw your own avatar in-game. Perhaps in the domestic policy screen or in the UP, where you see your avatar's portrait in-game. I think this would help players identify even more with their in-game persona.

If you use cheats, you can "hail" yourself, press CTRL+ALT+T. Although, it will bring up the default race relations "movie" unless you replace that as well. Alot of trouble to go to just to see your ingame portrait.

I spent an obscene amount of time finding my in-game portrait, and I'd really, really appreciate seeing it during the game. Maybe on the bar at the bottom somewhere, or at least in the diplomacy and UP screens somewhere. Pretty please?

you can see yourself in your metaverse scores when you click on your name. so everyone else could see you then too.

I'm not really into the metaverse. I'd prefer to have fun than be thinking "will this get me more points?" IT would be nice to see it in game somewhere. Maybe alliances could be announced, with pictures of the happy couple.
