How do you handle the Tech Tree

Ok I am a newb, but I seem to never be able to keep my Tech and Military viable. What are the Core things that I should research?? Do I just go all out in one Weapons Tech and one Defense Tech??? Should I start a game and begin on building up research or economy?? Basically I am trying to get a handle on not being invaded before I have defender at least in orbit on each planet. I seem to get to spread out on my Tech Development early in the game and this shoots me in the foot every time. Any suggestions??

Stay heavy in all brances of Tech. Keep an eye on the main diplomacy screen. If you stay ahead of the AI in tech you can always gift them one of two to get them off your back while you get your ships in orbit.

Or. Gift them tech for there ships. Not only does your military rating go up but theres goes down too.

IMO you should wait till you see what weapon techs are goin around before you start researching defense techs, increases the chance you'll have the appropriate defense when war starts.

For tech development, I typically see what the AI's are researching, and then follow up one or two paths in a focus to trade to the AI. Odds are they will spread their research a bit, allowing you to trade your higher level techs in one field for many basic techs across the other fields. The diplomacy branch is good for this, as it allows for you to get better deals. Otherwise, just make sure you don't focus on the same weapon and defense, as you would be more reluctant to trade the AI laser defenses if that is your only weapon platform.

Research a weapon tech very quick, and get ship in orbit. I like missiles. Then go the way you want. If you use a custom, try to get space militerization in your start techs.

My first targets are always some mid-range weapon tech, and to charge down the sensor tree first and get Eyes of the Universe built. Once you get that actually putting sensors on your ship becomes redundant. Having high speed ships with Eyes of the Universe is incredibly empowering, especially against the Dreadlords.

After that I do a good bit of spreading out, Engines and weapon techs over defensive techs. I'll start putting defensive techs in when they drop to 2-3 week times. Other areas are also handy once you have enough military strength to keep the enemy off your back.

Your going to get all kinds of advice here.

What I do is pretty not so obvious to most people.

I never research weapons or defences, I trade for them, and not for all of them, just one type of offense, period.
Even then I let the ai research 2 or 3 techs before I trade for the most recent one they researched.

I do research warp drives, and I DONT trade that unless it is unavoidable. Same with logistics.

I do NOT defend any planets. Not one single orbit.

Instead I use tiny and small ships, all engines and weapons, large fleets. In almost every battle I have had, My ships take out the enemies ships before they fire a shot. A typical ship in the mid game for me moves 6 or more spaces and has a 6 or more rating to offence, with a zero defence.
Lets repeat that. I use fast, tiny ships with no defence in large swarms. They usualy take out large capital battlegroups very quickly, with ZERO losses to my fleet ships. I have been playing with the ai on bright, and its getting easy so I will bump it up to intelligent and see if that still works.

I am not afraid of larger militaries. If they attack me, i reduce thier size very quickly with speed and offence.

Try not to trade away diplomacy, logistics, warp drive, and cultural techs. These are areas where you want an advantage, and if you trade to one, he will trade to others.

I also recomend you simply turn down the difficulty while you learn the ropes, and then gradualy turn it up as you find it getting easier.

Good luck, and no, my way isnt the only way, its just my way.

Miniturization is your friend. I bee line for advanced miniturization right away and that lets me create pretty decent early game fighters/heavy fighters for some early game warfare or for some early game defense/ arm dealing. I usually have espionage on all my neighbors and just research counters to them.
