Ok, I am doing well but cannot invade a planet. Are there planetary shields?

I tried to invade a planet and they appear to have planetary shields (there is a shield icon in the lower right corner of the planet). How can I bypass this? The AI has managed to develop massive beam weapons and tons of armor in a matter of a couple of years and my ships of the line are no longer the cat's meow. I can crush this empire if only I can bypass their planetary shields (or whatever is keeping my troop transports from initiating a planetary assault).

Those aren't shields... that icon means they have defending ships in orbit. Just click on the planet, you'll see the ships. You need to beat them down (just attack the planet with a warship, like you'd attack another ship/fleet).

Once you've beaten down their defending ships, the icon will disappear, and you can move in with transports as normal.
