1-hp rule

Hi All,

Just curious to know what people think of the 1-hp rule; would people prefer for it to be removed?

Personally; I would far prefer the rule to be removed, if ships mutually destroy each other then so be it.

I would prefer mutual destruction myself. It seems more coherent to my frame of mind.

Signed all over.

MAD seems more realistic, you should be able to kill/lose killerships through attrition.

I for one never like the 1 hp rule

Remove the tie rule, but boost DL hp as well ^^. They won't be anywhere as godly without it.

mutual destruction seems more sensible to me... I'd like the addition of two additional battle outcomes: mutual destruction if both fleets are destroyed, and stalemate if neither is. The last should also by possible with small fleets and high, matching defenses.

I never liked the 1-hp rule. It becomes an overpowered exploit where the most weapons become the most powerful defense. Isn't the role of defense modules to protect your ships, and weapons destroys opposing ships, and not to have weapons to both roles?

Whats the problem with both ships destroying each other? Wouldn't have that as a rule encourage people to build ships with defenses. Isn't that what why they are there for?

Hell yes, anything that makes the end game combat less broken is fine by me. Remove it, and allow both sides to annihilate each other. Why does one side HAVE to win? After all, if I fling a singularity at you, and you fire a speed of light beam attack at me, and neither of us move, we'll both be little more than radiation spikes.

Agreed. All the 1hp rule does is skew endgame combat and put the AI at a disadvantage when it doesn't use an OFM.

alright, tis might ound like a silly request, but please can someone explain to me what the 1 hp rule is.. I havent started playing the game yet.

The 1 HP rule is the all offense side of the tie rule. Basically, if both sides in a combat destroy each other in the exact same round, the side with the higher total attack value survives with 1 HP. This is regardless of how many HPs that ship started with (often, only 1 HP, so they are invincible). If your side has multiple ships that are mutually destroyed, only the single strongest ship survives, the rest are destroyed. This has the effect of making Huge size hulls much more powerful when they take advantage of this rule.

Many people first discover this rule when playing the campaign and fighting the Dread Lords. In this case, they discover a DLs ship they can't kill "because it keeps surviving with 1 hp". There are various threads on here to help people with the problem.

My guess is the combat method within the game has to return a winning side, and mutual destruction isn't supported in the underlying code. Just a guess.

If it was an easy thing to remove, it should be removed.

Kryo, any chance you could dig up a confirmation or correction of Windstar's guess?

I have to agree with the folks who think the current rule doesn't make sense and nearly amounts to an exploit option for players.

1 hp rule = stupid... signed signed...

If making ties or mad is hard, I'd vote for a coin flip for the winner. That way exploiting this wouldn't work so well.

Oh and it's not entirely an exploit, for those who say "just don't do it"...

Yes, if it can't be removed easily due to the code, just have a 50/50 chance of either ship getting destroyed. Might seem a bit arbitary but ship combat relies on a bit of luck anyway. To be honest though, i really don't see why removing something like this would be so hard. Certainly no more difficult then including other features in an expansion pack.
