Defenses Bigger than Guns?

I have only played the beta for about 4 hours (LOOKING GOOD!), but I have a question:

Why do defenses take up more space than offensive measures. Doesn't this make defenses not cost effective? Doesn't this allow for the possibility of ignoring defenses by saturating such defenses with more weaponry? (i.e. if my oppoenent has a shield of 3, why not just ignore defenses and but 9 extra lasers for what the shielding would have costed me ...)

If you attack first then yes, more weapons is better. However, if you are attacked then you need defences to stay alive long enough to hit back.

Aren't defenses cheaper to research though?

I have another question in relation to this topic: Will ships in GalCiv 2 have a higher "survivability" rating, thus making retreat a viable option?

For that matter, will ships even be able to retreat? In other words, since combat is automated, will I still have a fleet left even if I lose, or will it be completely destroyed?

Doubt it the AI in the game won't surrender

but i recomend that Hull sizes and weaponry sizes are changed so you can add more stuff

I think fights are going to remain to the death.

That would kind of suck if it's true. If my admiral can see that he's clearly losing the battle, it would be nice if he could withdraw the fleet while he still had ships left. I'd like it if when a battle was about to begin, we at least had the option of letting our admiral know whether he should fight to the death or not.

Retreating isn't really a viable option. If you tried what would stop your opponent from just following and finishing you off anyways. If it was implemented then you should have a reduced defense ....aka being shot in the back approach.
Or maybe you could have a percentage if you can retreat successfully. This could be done by your admirals skill lvl versus your opponents skill lvl. For example if your ADM was lvl 2 and your opponent was lvl 4 then you would only have a 10% chance of a successful retreat. Or you was skill lvl 4 and opponent was skill lvl 2 then you would have a 60% of success. This could also be done by your ships lvls. But if your retreat was successful the damage to your ships would slow you down til repaired giving your attackers a chance to catch you and finish you off.

I like this idea.
