Can you guess the answer...

Here's a question I heard on a news program and didn't get the answer right. I thought it would be interesting to see who would be able to guess the answer correctly.

What was invented in the 1980's, that is square and still around?

Hint: It's a very useful item. (Note: I changed the heading (and the word created to invented) to see if there would be more guesses)

I think I know what the answer is. I'll let others guess. If I am right, it's a puzzle I could never solve.

I was thinking Rubbix Cube first but when you say it's a very useful item it kinda killed that idea... because it's just a puzzle and doesn't have too much use...

Though I was also going to say Rush Limbaugh... because he's a bigtime square.. but he didn't fit the criteria either....
