Some feedback from a returning player

Hello! Here is some feedback on what I've seen so far.

The game looks extremely promising overall. The core gameplay is highly entertaining.

You avoided the trap of overcomplicating by adding too many shenanigans. And the changes that have been made are all very positive! I like the quality of life improvements such as being able to bring up a tab with every planet. Interactions with other players and the market system are more streamlined, which is absolutely excellent! I also like how the management of planets have changed, and the added assymmetry between the races.

Two critical points :

Some more visual clarity with respect to the research tree would be highly appreciated. Right now it is often not clear (visually speaking) what has already been researched or not. I also find it somewhat difficult to find where the research for something specific is, especially when I have not upgraded enough tiers and the box is completely dark. (Last game I spent 2 minutes looking for the (dark) box for researching the ogrov prototype. This is also amplified by the fact that the pictures are very small. It is somewhat difficult to see exactly what the picture represent without hovering them. I understand that there is a lot of research to cram into one small overviewable space. But it feels like something could be done. This is never an issue for me while playing Sins Rebellion.

If you have not already given this serious thought, I would strongly suggest implementing a ranking system and a ranked que ASAP on release. This will definitely help the longevity of the game, as it encourages competetive play and content creation. It also allows solo players to find suitable opponents without calling up their high school friends back from when Sins 1 was released. The risk otherwise is that Sins 2 becomes an extremely niched game that only a select few dedicated players play.

That was all for now and I hope this helps. I look forward to seeing the final product!

Strongly agree with the research visibility, mentioned that in my own feedback post yesterday.

As far as rankings go, it's not like there's any issue with the idea, but sadly I think with a game like this, as with Sins 1, being a niche thing is a forgone conclusion.

Games can easily grind out for far too many hours for an approachable ranked multiplayer environment, even basic matchmaking I'd bet on being dead on arrival. It's going to be a game heavily played single-player, among friend groups, and those who go serious with it will form their own communities.

So in reality, anything to facilitate that being as smooth and as stable as possible is excellent, but I think any real effort to create a multiplayer "scene" would be wasted. Happy to be wrong of course, but just as happy to take bets on the subject ðŸ˜‚

Hi David! That is a very fair point. I think you are right that Sins 2 is not as suitable for a multiplayer scene as many other games. My vague sense was that at least with respect to 1v1, and perhaps also 2v2, the grinding time of the games are manageble for those who like the game and are willing to play competetively. I could be wrong too, of course. But perhaps there is no harm in at least trying.

That's the thing though, there is. Up to the creators and whatever budget they have to throw around, but features don't just pop into existence of their own accord. Whatever people, time, and money you put towards one thing isn't going to another. If the thing you choose is a flop, the loss elsewhere is harm.

I would suggest, at a minimum, an indicator that shows you have completed all research in each line of research and then a final completion visibility icon or persistent notification (in the research tree). A simple highlighting (or dimming, greying out) of each completed bar would be helpful. Even after everything is researched, I find myself checking every icon one by one to see if I have completed it and often there is one or two pieces that I haven't finished yet just sitting there in obscurity.
