I had made a guide on Steam and suddenly found that all the links I put in there had been automatically hidden by Steam. So here's an exact duplicate of that guide as of 2023-06-06:
Introduction
So... despite its great concept, Demigod is essentially a dead game, I believe mainly because the multiplayer is so prone to lag if not all players have good ping. But I figured it wouldn't hurt to put this out since there's usually going to be at least a few new players for this game during sales. If you can work around the flaws, it can still be a fun experience. Find a few nice pals to play with before you wait around in a lobby all day. There's a few groups on steam - though they're not super active you might find multiplayer games from time to time.
Feel free to join this group chat if you're trying to find people to play with: https://s.team/chat/mmQesbgE
While there's a bit of advice in this guide itself, most of it is links to mods or sites with further information.
Various bugs
Some of these bugs are gamebreaking, others are just annoying. Either way, it's good to know about them.
Alt-Tab crash
As far as I know, the only safe time to Alt-Tab in this game is in the menu or in lobby. If you Alt-Tab during launch, it crashes, if you do it during the game, you at least lose the marker indicating the range of your abilities. (Alt-tabbing in windowed mode is rather safe, though.)
"Invalid Gamestate"
This crash sometimes happens when a match is about to begin. It can be prevented by all players removing a few files in one of the game's folders. I think it doesn't always crash if all players still have the files, but I'm not sure about that. Safe thing is to remove them. Most experienced players will have done this. And since it's not compatible when people with and without the files play together, you'll need to do it too when playing with experienced players.
The location is:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Demigod\bindata\characters\King"
In this "King" folder there is a folder called "Animations" and four single files. Remove the single files (back them up, why not), but keep the "Animations" folder.
Refresh
When players join a lobby or change their slot, the game sometimes doesn't display this correctly. You can refresh the lobby by opening and closing an unused slot, then everybody can see what's going on again.
Picking up items with full inventory
A sometimes useful feature in-game is the ability to drop item by right-clicking on them in your inventory (when you're not in the shop window - there a right click sells the item). Dropped items are visible on the map for anyone to pick up. But you need an open slot in your inventory for that. If you try picking up an item without a free slot for it, the item will simply disappear. Which is extremely unfortunate if you just bought an artifact for your carry.
Mods and how to install them
Installing mods
This post explains the how-to quite thoroughly:
https://forums.demigodgame.com/369780/instructions-about-installing-mods
For the Steam version, the folder containing the mod goes into this directory. It's usually a matter of simple copy and paste:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Demigod\bindata\mods
Pacov's combined installation package
This installer collects the most essential and most frequently used mods in one place. These are the ones you should definitely get and it even comes with a handy installer. Simply double click the installer and it should automatically find your Demigod folder. Especially the Enhanced UI improves the in-game experience (and you can use it in multiplayer even when others don't have the mod). I also like playing with Balance Mod. (There's also one that vastly improves the AI, and Uberfix, which fixes a variety of bugs.)
The contents of the package are described in this forum post (the actual download link doesn't lead anywhere anymore):

Extended BalanceMod_v0.X by Schwiegerknecht (in development/testing)
While Lord Orion's original BalanceMod introduces a lot of good changes, there are still many items that are either completely unviable or just quite bad by comparison. This mod focuses on changing that by making more build options available and nerfing some of the most centralizing items.
(Currently testing, so feel free to leave feedback.)

I appreciate replays to see how the changes work ingame. If you have any you would like to share, you can upload them here (filename should contain at least mod version, ideally matchup): https://app.box.com/s/qpx334amine2q3370x15mw0agxlafknj
(Or just upload them wherever you like and let me know.)
Enfos Mod v1.3 Test by Exxcentric
This is a very well done PvE mod for the map The Brothers. Basically, battle waves of minions (there have been some new ones created for this mod) and see how far you can go. To play, choose The Brothers as map and put one AI on the dark team. Unfortunately, the link to the multiplayer version does not work anymore. So you can't compete against each other, but co-op is fully functional.

Hercules Mod by M_KIII (in development)
All sorts of crazy and epic stuff, with a lot of new items and basically infinite leveling.

The Avatar by Neilo
This mod adds a new item to the artifact shop.

QoT: Focus Mod by Ptarth
This mod emphasizes the differences between Queen of Thorns' open and closed form and makes them more extreme.

More Minions by Seipienti / Schwiegerknecht
A mod that doubles the minions generals can summon through idols and abilities. I updated the old version by Seipienti to make it compatible with other mods.

Cloak of Invisibility by Schwiegerknecht
This mod adds the Cloak of Invisibility to the artifact shop at the cost of 8000 gold. This item can be found in the game files, but didn't make it into the game (for good reason, it's pretty strong). I couldn't find the old mod for this so I made another.

Infinite Mana and Cooldown Reduction by Schwiegerknecht
Two mods for silly games that go well together. The Infinite Mana mod removes all mana costs for abilities and idols and also adds base mana regeneration. The Cooldown Reduction mod reduces cooldowns for abilities and idols by 50%. (It doesn't change favor items, though.)

Increased Level (30) by Schwiegerknecht
This imaginatively named mod does exactly what the name suggests and nothing more: You can now level to 30.

That's all I've got for now. If I ever finish another mod I'll share it
You can also see for yourself if you can find some buried old mods (though many download-links in the forums don't work anymore): https://forums.demigodgame.com/forum/622

Guides and other information
Open games
This site shows open lobbies and games currently in progress. Usually the number of open games is about zero, so don't get your hopes up too much, if you don't have a game planned with others.

Guides and other information
The Demigod Wiki. It contains all sorts of information on gameplay mechanics, and also guides for various Demigod builds (not all of which I would consider to be very effective, though):
https://demigod.fandom.com/wiki/Demigod_Wiki
A general guide, covering the basic strategies of the game:
https://forums.demigodgame.com/449372/a-very-basic-guide-to-starting-out-in-demigod
If you're looking for guides for a certain Demigod, you'll find much better ones here:
https://forums.demigodgame.com/414557/2012-compilation-of-demigod-strategy-guides-per-character
(All the linked guides in that post do not load, because the forums have moved from demigodthegame.com to demigodgame.com at some point. Simply change the URL accordingly and you should be good.)
Replays
If you want to learn how to get better at the game, it is also a good idea to look at replays. There's enough replays out there with really good players, which you'll find in the old tournament games, for example. This site has long ago removed the section for Demigod, but this link still works, somehow:
https://www.gamereplays.org/demigod/replays.php?game=51&tab=popular&show=index&tab_new=upcoming&display_mode=standard
(Replays, for some strange reason, are located in:
"Documents\My Games\Gas Powered Games\Demigod\replays\*your in-game profile*" The game lets you load them through the main menu. You will also find your last game as a replay in that folder btw. If you want to save it, go to the folder and change the name of "LastGame.DGReplay" before your next game, else it gets overwritten.)
That's it
If you have any questions or you think there's anything I forgot or that should be in here, let me know. Other than that, good luck finding games
Enjoy.
(PS: Don't level Plague on Unclean Beast in Multiplayer. Pure lag.)
