Ship positioning in battle changed 1.8?

I noticed the combat ship positioning seems to have changed since 1.8?

I used to have a strategy of upgrading obsolete small hull ships to use up logistics in my modern fleet.... the small hull ship will have high weapons and be classed as a 'capital' so my larger more powerful escort ships will protect them.

Suddenly after 1.8 the large escort ships hang back and all the small hulled capital ships get creamed!

Its an interesting re-balance but not mentioned in the change log for 1.8?

So there is really no point upgrading small hulls now since they are just cannon fodder?

Are we better of upgrading them to constructors instead now? what do you think?

We didn't rebalance it.  However, we did fix a bug that if you had two fleets of support ships then they would both essentially stay as far as possible from each other and the battle would never end.

Interesting on the support ships...... so if an enemy destroyed your main fleet but your support ship managed to defeat their last combat ship and you have only support ships left in battle on both sides, the battle would never end?

I should explain better....

I mean the battle starting position..... the large hull escort vessel starting position is further back and the small hulled capital ships begin the battle further ahead.

That way the small hulled capital ships get targeted and destroyed before the large hull escort can be in range, or even a large hulled capital ship for that matter.

I am not complaining, it seems to be more intuitive that the smaller ships will be in front, i am just curious because i did not hear anything about this change?

However it happened, it is definitely the case that before 1.8 update my large hulled escort vessel would begin the battle in front of my small hulled capital ships, now post 1.8 it begins the battle behind them.

Possibly there was an update in between which made this change that i skipped over, making it seem like 1.8 caused it?
