Any chance Stardock will make modding shipsets for AI custom ships easier?

My goodness is modding shipsets to make a ship style out of custom designed ships for the AI to play hard!

 

I've been trying to piece together ship set files for AI opponent species from the custom designed ships on the steam workshop.

 

Even with Gauntlet's immensely good shipset tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JyuzaYS0ewY), the amount of labour of love in updating the ships sets files with the steamworkshop ships AND trying to ensure that they all match a basic shipstyle from the core alien species is too much to bear. Even as a labour of love.

 

Are Stardock considering making this any easier? It would add so much depth to what is a beautiful game and really make it the player's own. I'd like to pitch if I could for some easier way of designing shipsets from the designs that users put up - perhaps geting rid of the need for them to have a base shipset style!

 

Any thoughts anyone?

I thought it was quite a chore too. Kinda still do, but, the more you do the faster you get :)

As to ship style, that is easy to get around. Boot a game pick a race and resave the designs as templates and they will have that races "base".

Hi Horemvore, how do I do that? I know this sounds stupid - but if I download custom designs, they only open with the saved game. Do you mean save them as templates and then load them as templates to the saved game....

What I do to make new templates is, download them from workshop, open them in designer, rescale if needed. Then save them by checking the "Save as Template" with a new name with a easy format to recognise like :- ModAbreviation_Race_Size_Name. After this I create new ship faction defines for each race. (I followed the guide/Gauntlets video). Then place the XML's in the Example Mod/Game directory for testing.

Unfortunatly, saved games cant not be effected by templates. I found this out the hard way when a custom Culture Starbase I copied over to a new template without resizing it filled a radius of 12 hexes, I think this is due to me using custom xml's, not 100% tbh. I had to start a new game for the ajusted template to take effect. But, I am new to creating template xmls and could be doing somthing wrong.

Also, I recommend you make a shipset file, with a fairly standardized use of designs, then copy those design names to a text file. Then, when making a new ship set, you simply use find/replace to update a file.

I copy my FTH shipset file, rename it, then just replace all "Cargo Carrier" design, which is: 0-FTH Cargo Carrier 01_3186C99D4550455788383B944716F327

 

With the new ship design for Cargo based Carriers. This really speeds things up. Whereas, in my video tutorial, I'm doing it line by line.

^^^ Yeah that, i worked that out after my 2nd shipset.

I use _ instead of spaces though, purely due to the editor(Modbuddy from Civ5) i am using to modify/create xml's, it makes easier editing of a single update, ctrl+left click to select then a simple tap of C or V to copy/paste, spaces mess that up.

Yup, if you save them as Templates from the designer it generates the string code automaticly, it even changes the code if you overwrite an existing blueprint.

Right,

What I'm saying is, I make one shipset file manually, using unique ships. But I standardize the size/model usage. For Example, I always make a Balanced, Missile, Kinetic, and Beam hull of Small and Up, I make a Cargo for civilian, constructor, and transport.

I'm not make three different transport hulls.

So I then, record those ship names in a separate file. I copy the new manually created shipset file, I then rename, and do a "find and replace" command on each ship I've noted. So as long as I keep to my basic hull making format, I just have to do like 15 find and replace commands instead of manually copying and pasting a ship name 50+ times.

Hope that makes sense. It has nothing to do with ship names per-se. Its about standardizing how many hulls you make per shipset.

Yes, we are looking into the best way to let people share entire factions, Including tech trees, ship sets, and ship designs. We will let you know when it gets close.

I was wondering if you could help me Guantlet. I am using your designs as templates rather than creating my own. Is there any way I could add more small, medium, large amd huge ship classes to the ShipDefs and ShipStyles files so I can add more designs to each ship style?

You can add as many as you want, Names just have to be unique, like the default Cruiser, CruiserL, CruiserP, CruiserD, if you wanted more cruisers you can just add them in, CruiserX, CruiserY, CruiserZ In both the FactionShipStyle, this file to access them, and ShipClassDefs, this file pointing at your designs. Simply copy existing entrys and edit as needed.

Yup, there's nothing wrong with making variants, I just was making so many sets, I didn't have the time to do so. If your on the latest version of GRM, look at the Terran Sovereignty set, you'll see there, that I actually have put in some variant designs for things, such as a special energy weapon medium hull, and special missile battleships and such.

Its also possible to make whole new classes of ships, but that requires both adding to the shipset file AND making a new blueprint.

Built my first ship style but have an error, if any of you folks have the time and patience to give this a few seconds.  

 

I can see the ship style in the appearance screen and the preview ship for the style. But when I try and load a game with that ship style it kicks me off. 

 

Have any of you encountered this problem before?

Remove the _ from         <InternalName>Ferrun_ShipStyleSet</InternalName>

 

Actualy remove all the _ from InternalName. Just to make sure.

And you have a double one here:         <ShipClass>Ferrun__StartingScout</ShipClass>

 

Appart form that, all the code looks fine. Pretty sure _ is not an allowed character in <InternalName>

Have you tried to allow mods in the options menu? This needs to be on.

Yup, I have Mods selected. It isn't that. Undoubtedly something simple
