[Not a Bug] [1.12] Request Constructor does NOT queue a basic constructor

The 1.10 patch notes say "Request Constructor Button currently builds a basic constructor instead of latest constructor". I have not found this to be the case. This image shows me requesting a constructor, while researching the Life Support tech.

Pre-uprade request

The one and only shipyard on the map fulfilled that order with a Shaper M5.

Pre-upgrade request fulfilled

A few turns later after the research on Life Support was complete, I requested another constructor. I did literally nothing else in that time.

Post-upgrade request

The shipyard fulfilled that order, but with the latest model, the Shaper M7.

Post-upgrade request fulfilled

So it doesn't work as advertised. It queued the M7 instead of the M5, or ideally the M1. Did it ever work? EXE version 1.1.12.0

As i understand it, the basic constructor was a stopgap fix to an issue where the Request Constructor didn't work at all if the standard constructor blueprints were all obsoleted.  The intent was always to come up with a better fix for the long term.  Perhaps they have done that in 1.12.

Confirmed, that is exactly how it works, thanks for the info. So I guess this isn't a bug then, just another example of the game needing more polish during this beta phase.

It seems to me that basic constructor is only taken when the default Construction line has been obsoleted. That is what I do, and then create a new constructor line with another name so your bases request the basic one and you can still produce faster and longer ranged ones if you like. I am playing on the latest patch but didn't seem like anything has changed in the last few versions

Your best bet is to mod the default constructor dynamic blueprint so it has less extraneous modules on it. Then the whole auto upgrade becomes super useful because you can auto order constructors with multiple constructor modules on them. Which is just awesome.

One warning: once you start upgrading the standard constructor blueprint, you will not stop. You will find yourself re-designing every ship before you are satisfied...

Oh so true :).

Very true. :)

BTW is there a way to force a ship role for a given blueprint? There's the <Role> tag but it seems to not work, or at least it doesn't affect the role of the ship created from the blueprint.
