Starbases // Shipyards defending planets from Transport if planet is in their influence.

Usually a Shipyard or a Starbase isn't looking for a fight because it's an import piece of space real estate however, when you have an unarmed transport ship coming in to invade one of my undefended planets and that my planet is within the influence area of armed starbases or near a armed shipyard then the Starbases / Shipyards should open fire on the transport ship.

Starbases or Shipyards are not as important as colony planets so they should be involved in defense.

The influence of a Shipyard could be calculated the same way it is for a Star base.

There are no weapons in GCIII that can fire from one hex to another, so as long as a ship doesn't enter the actual tile of a starbase or shipyard it is staying out of range of their weapons.

You could make it work with the fluff by saying the starbase is launching drones or fighters.

*technically there are multi-hex weapons out there.

Starbases give 'boosts' to ships in their zone (when upgraded).

an ideology choice gives a free escort fighter to any freighter in your influence zone.

...

as examples.

I get the annoyance wrt single transports wandering around looking for an undefended planet to snipe.  The AI does seem to like doing that, though never tries to protect them.

ofc the other side to than annoyance is that no matter the military levels or planet defense levels, or size of population, a single pop-transport can take out a planet 100% of the time.

If invasions were cleaned up and fixed, the single transport issue wouldn't be much of an issue.
