I've seen this too and in Beta 1, it happens when zooming in and out it always unfreezes at least for me but the freeze can last 5 - 10 seconds occasionally longer, I'm assuming it's loading assets or something as the LOD changes.

I just had the game freeze when zooming out. I took a screen shot, ran SDSupportTool, and opened a ticket. Other things I noticed are that the game still seemed to be running, just not updating the window. The music kept playing, the CPU Usage meters showed usage consistent with the game still running, etc. When I minimized the window (I play in windowed mode, primarily to keep my resource monitors in view) and restored it, it came back up all black (it didn't refresh the window). I was not able to close the game window by using the "close" button at the top right corner of the window (the "X"), but I was able to close the game from the task bar (another reason for running windowed).

What size map are you guys playing on?  The freeze problems seem very common, yet I haven't seen any freezes and only one crash, but then I've only been playing on medium maps.

I am playing on a huge galaxy. I have an Intel i7-4770 with 16GB, of which only about 6GB gets allocated to back up virtual memory on my PC (no suspicion of page thrashing), and a GeForce GT 640. with 4GB.
