Patrol command for ships

It may be a good idea to have a patrol option when giving commands to ships.

A ship in patrol would fly around a predefined path and attack all enemy vessels that come into range.

This would be beneficial especially when protecting one's trade routs. 


Also one could imagine having different patrol options:

  auto-engage all

  engage only military targets

  engage only weaker targets

  just scout 

 

The last two would pause the patrolling ship and request the player's attention when some targets come into range

WAYPOINTS! ones we can go in a closed loop like the letter O and D and ones we can go back and forth like the letters Z and L.

there is a big difference between the two types though. this is because a ship returning to point A. on letter L might require the ship to cut the waypoints to get to the start again like this: \ making the route more like a triangle |_\ .

Or the ship could reverse course through the Z or L.

Exactly! It would be nice if there was a choice to make a loop or go back and forth.

A simple way would be to have it work based on how you placed the waypoints as in if you place a waypoint over top of another waypoint it considers it a loop while if you place the final waypoint not near any others it considers it a turn about

This gets my vote.  I've always wanted to be able to set up simple patrol routes as well.  Something like what they had in Empire/Empire Deluxe.

Patrol points are something I first came across in Alpha Centauri, my first space-gaming love.  They should be implemented.

I thought of Empire Deluxe as well last time I was playing the alpha, would love to setup patrols.
