city defender issue - proposal

"When a city gets attacked twice in one turn, sometimes it will lack all its militia defense the second time around." - Heavenfall

According to frogboy, this is by design, presumably to make it easier to capture heavily-defended cities?

I would like to propose a solution for the devs, but obviously am soliciting feedback here:

I'm not sure if it's possible, but what if you could choose which defenders fight a given battle?  defenders with high-initiative could fight again if the city was attacked more than once per turn.  Might give you a little more control over city defense.

sidenote: I also think governors should bolster defense as well.

Edit: a simpler proposal could be to always let standard city militia fight, and stationed units can only fight more than once if they have a certain initiative.

Not sure I get it, how would you (or the AI) know how many times you're going to be attacked in a turn thereby letting you make any kind of choice?

I believe that the issue was misunderstood. I think it was assumed they meant dead defenders weren't respawning for multiple attacks in one round, not that completely unharmed defenders vanish after the first attack. I really can't believe the later is intended, it allows players to completely bypass a city's defenses by simply summoning a cheap unit and sending them in alone first to die, then the real army can march in and only face the 1 or 2 units the AI left in the city. That's just not an acceptable gameplay mechanic.

you wouldn't know ahead of time, so there is an element of risk if your city is surrounded.  but you could choose to let some defenders hang back to be available for another attack.

I've seen this happen so I'm pretty sure this is exactly the issue.
