Question about settling land

Just started playing a game on a medium sized map, (had been playing on smaller ones) and encountered a huge field of land that I could settle on, like 10x10 approximately. My question is, how many cities can I build on this? Just one, or if I build on the edge will there still be spaces to build on the far opposite side? Or is it that settling an area turns off all contiguous possible build spots?

Each city must be at least 6 tiles apart. So for your 10 x 10 you could possibly settle 4 cities at the corners.
