[0.982] - diplomacy - what happened?

Playing my first game using 0.982 - on normal difficulty

I have met a three factions - all warmish relationship.

All of a sudden I get a message "because you are war without friend we will have head on a spike" or words to that effects. In the next two turns every single nation has declared war on me including 4 that I hadn't even met yet. The only thing that I may have done is strayed into another opponents territory in order to complete a mission.

My faction is scoring pretty poor, but only 1 or 2 points below other factions.

What is going on? This isn't much fun. I certainly didn't see this coming.

I had a look at trying to make peace again. Nations who are also at the bottom of the ladder want 3000 gold to make peace.

This is diplomacy gone wild.

I had a similar experience in my first try at 0.982, I was playing a kingdom faction, had met 1 other kingdom and 2x empire races, I was at the top of the power rankings (around 35 or so, other races about 3 or so points lower).  Empire races were either friendly or close relations, so I wasn't worried about them.

Then I met empire race 3, who was at power 90 after a good start location/ rushing some heavy warfare units and some good drops.  They wardecced me immediately on seeing my explorer, next turn all empire races decced war, saying since their friend was at war with me they were going to join in . . .needless to say that didn't end well for me.

Reminded me a bit of the war cascades in some EU3 games that used to occur.  Actually I like the mechanic, might make deciding who to go to war with or save and keep strong an interesting thing . .but right now I think the ##s need to be tweaked a bit to prevent mass wars of annihilation right off the bat.  Especially since power rankings near the start can be skewed pretty easily by a good drop or location, and make a war or two common.

Oh boy, be careful what I wish for... Brad, I think you gave all the faction AI's crack.

lol - yeah, I just declared war on a faction I'm hostile with and had 3 others declare war on me. Brad, you over delivered! This is getting good.  :digichet:

Just fixed this so that if they have unknown relations with you or their intelligence is below normal they won't do this.

Oh I definately don't mind AI friendlies getting together and declaring war on me.

I would be irritated if all factions did this...there should be division between empire and kingdom.

If a 'harsh' war is declared on my, it would be nice if allies who are close in relation came to my aid on occasion.

I would also be irritated if group-wars happened every game. There should be different diplomatic paths AI can take...

Overall it's coming along very nicely.

On a side note, Frog; how much brainstorming for the AI political agenda is done? How much variation and types of interaction can occur? Should some beta testers get together and have some 'what if' scenarios??

I had the same thing happen to me. Everyone was happy with me then all of a sudden three nations all declared war on me all in the same turn (both Kingdom and Empire nations).

It has happened again. A neighbour, Resolon, declares war on me. He is the weakest faction. All other factions declare war on me - even though I am friendly with some of them. Why do none of them side with me? I really do not like this new behaviour I hope it gets toned down as for me this is a game breaker. There I am struggling to build an empire build relations and all of that gets undone in one turn.

Just reloaded using 0.983 - ,much better - still declaration of war - joined by one of his allies but the rest didn't follow suit - phew!

Frogboy, shouldn't fractions with the same alignment and positive relations (or at least such Kingdoms) stay away from the fight if the player has never been the aggressor before?

I do not see the logic behind Procipinee joining on Yithril's side to beat up a peaceful Altar, no matter how high the difficulty.

Complete agreement.  It makes no sense for this to happen.  It's one of those fourth wall breakers because you lose the illusion of opponents acting in an "intelligent" manner.  Suddenly they become AIs following a set of rules--which is what they are, but all the elaborate windowdressing in the game (races, background, lore, images, etc) is designed in part to obscure that fact.
