Are there any plans to update the political machine in the future to add some former presidents and also add the "campaign" gameplay as there were in the 2008 version of the game?
more candidates are coming but it's unlikely there will be a campaign.

What we can't do on the other side, is add more fun/interesting thing to a game that seem to be a downgrade from the last version

On a more serious note, do you tell us that the game is more or less in it's final version?
I think someone is a little unhappy. Maybe this game would have been better if you guys would have just called the old game the political machine 2012 and sold it to us again.
I think the game is awesome... I want an expansion to where I am able to go into president and and deal with passing bills!
Many gameplay elements can be easily added, and It would be nice to see people being pro active than negative about the game. I bought 2012 having never played the 2008 version, But I am quite aware that 2012 is a somewhat cut down version with a few extra features such as battleground states. But most of the pieces are there for anyone to add new content to the game, and It would be really good if we could get a modding community around this game.
Simple Xml editing is obviously possible, allowing you to add lodes of new content, such as replace endorsements, add new random events, change stats, remove features change state names, change party details.
Yes you could do all this in 2008, but, they are selling this game at a reduced price from the 2008 version, as they are aware that it has "less content" by focusing on just the US presidential election. So yeh, this game is probably better for people who didn't play 2008, but why not get pro active, and add some content yourself? Its not really very difficult.

I very much enjoyed The Political Machine 2008's different campaigns. While the 1860 election was entertaining (especially Barack Obama's 99% against Slavery), I particularly enjoyed the Europa and the Galactic Civilizations campaigns. I would very much love to see something this creative and hilarious make a comeback!
Additionally, I was wondering if The Political Machine 2008 might show up on Steam sometime. Who knows what happened to my original disk in 4 years, and if nothing else, I would love to replay the aforementioned campaigns.
Finally, I think it would be fascinating to do a simulation mode; you know, where you could either watch two CPU opponents battle it out across the nation or at least simulate to the "Election Night" stage and watch the map light up as The Political Machine predicts the near future for Obama v. Romney, or the incredibly improbable scenario of Franken v. Cain!
