Veryoversuperpowered spell

Dirge of Ceresa

I think the "Dirge of Ceresa" is far too overpowered. I can kill with this spell any army. I am droped behind in the tech tree, I havent got a decent army, I have only one deathshard, but I can devastate any army of the other faction. It deals poison damage, so it doesn't kill a lot of monster, but the armies of other factions have no chance.

This spell couldn't be accesible in early game. But see:

the spell: All enemy unit take 6 (+3 per DS) poison damage PER MEMBER an take 3 poison damage (+3 per DS) per turn FOR 10 TURNS.

Ceresa is on the 8. level, with 4. level death magic, and I have 1 death shard.

The armies (lots of army and 4 heroes on the other side):

Before my moves:

The first effect (I used only the "Dirge of Ceresa" spell (and a slow+web) and moved back my units. I haven't got archers and I didn't used my other hero.):

After two "rounds" the enemy army is nowhere. But I didn't do anything. They moved and died of poison:

From here the golem wasn't a problem. In my army nobody died:

It was fun, really . . . but

I agree.  This was going to be one of the spells I mentioned.  It is stupidly overpowered compared to most of the other combat magic.

Giant form also needs to be adjusted.  It costs too little for a huge benefit... on the other side of things.  I had a late game warrior style setup where I had over 180 attack with this spell running.

Most of the other magic effects seem to be decently balanced... they can do huge damage with enough shards and evoker levels, but not much more than melee without giant form.

In addition, however, there needs to be a larger selection of damage spells from elements that are not well represented.  I would suggest a Hail attack for water (single target spell needed), and 'Crush' for earth (attack by forcing dirt to constrict around the target.)

I do not think that there needs to be more damage spells for the different elements. However, I think that there could be specialized books available for heros which require more than one elemental school and benefit only from shards of both/all elements represented by the spell.

For example, that Hail attack could be a water/air spell.

To be fair, Dirge of Ceresa is just a bit of an upgrade on a spell called Contagion, which itself is also very powerful. Dirge just adds a front side damage, where as Contagion is all overtime... at the cost of some more mana to cast. To be honest, I think they just need some more resistances on common races. Give everyone say 50 point of res, and spread it around the 4 elements (more if they have negatives res). Some might be really resistant to poison, some might be to ice, some to fire, etc... that way you have to change your tactic a bit when you face someone different. Right now, the only one with any resist at all is Magnar.

I like the idea giving resist to some factions.

And a very powerful spell could have side effects. For example the Dirge of Ceresa could affect the own army as well, but with weaker effect. For example could damage 25 per cent of the original damage on my units.
