Why do AI civs always start right next to me

The title pretty much says it all. Even on large maps with reduced number of opponents there is always at least one other civ right next to me. This is not the style of play I enjoy and would like the option to have AI civs start further away. Just a personal opinion some may like the early competetion and pioneer spam rush but not to my taste.

I agree. I like some space to explore and tame, survey and settle. With near neighbors much of the early game is lost.

Sadly I also have to agree... the game I just started yesterday got bogged down because to the right I got a faction that won't let me pass and I'm not ready for war yet. To the left I got death demons... kind of hard with just one city and without mobs to kill. Also one happened to be close to me in every game.

The only game I tried yesterday I was in a cayon and just outside the cayon I had another civ.

I pass by they had a few cities out there with many monsters running around. The monsters were not attacking them but as soon as I created an outpost I was attacked.

Are these monsters working for the other civ?

Regenerate the map:

Having another faction right nearby might be an interesting twist on the early game.  Other times (like the spot you're in) it's just annoying.

If another civ is blocking you then you can also try to get a non aggression pact with them, then they will let you pass.
