Please release sourcecode when War of Magic is end-of-lifed and Fallen Enchantress is released

Hello Brad,

Please consider releasing the source code to War of Magic as part of the release Fallen Enchantress. As a day 0 download to everyone who owns a copy

Seven reasons:

  • Rebuild relations with modding community
  • Generate user excitement and foster community growth
  • Ensure the hard work on WoM is not simply evaporated into the ether by giving it a venue that doesn't compete with FE
  • allow users to experiment with ideas you might find interesting in a post-FE launch
  • A media-friendly exercise, it'll make headlines when you do it and is a great chance to talk about the hard work you're doing with FE
  • Won't impact FE sales 
  • Lets you continue to experiment with the AI and have an audience

 

 

It is a charitable act that would enrich the strategic TBS genre by developing interest and exposing students and amateurs to real code for a working engine. Helping the genre evolve and become richer will attract new customers for everyone.

The unofficial line when I asked a few months back was that it was not going to see open-source because it would be too embarrassing. Apparently a lot of the manhours that were supposed to make it passable to the public ended up being rushed into solving the early issues of Demigod.

As for the topic, usually one doesn't release the source code of something you expect to use in the future for free. (Don't ask me why though.) The underlying engine for WoM and FE are very similar after all, so in releasing the source for WoM you also probably release most of it for FE and the like. :/
