How to balance the demigods in matches

Use the Point System

The other thread about trying to balance Reg is getting stuck in the quicksand, QoT and DA are hardly getting a mention. Maybe we need another alternative.

How about we simply use the point system and ask Stardock/GPG to add a drop down box in the game options.

So Tier1s are 3 points, Tier2 is 2 points, and Tier3 is 1 point. Then the drop down box would let you select how many points you can use on each team, from 5 to 25. All the noobs games would be unaware and just leave it at the default of 25 points. But Skilled 3v3 would routinely create lobbies with about a 7 point maximum.

This way Stardock/GPG do not need to bugger around coding anything more than 1 relatively simple dropdown box. Somehow I can't see them doing much more work than that! The community just needs to decide which demis go into which tier. But by and large I think we agree:

Tier1: UB, Oak, Erb, Rook

Tier2: TB, QoT, Occ, Sed

Tier3:  DA, Reg

 I say 5 to 25, because in a 5v5 you need a minimum of 5 Tier3’s and a maximum of 5 Tier1’s.

Sorry, but not only is this a bad idea, but it's actually far more difficult to implement from a code perspective than you know.  Looking in the lobby code, GPG already tried some forced-demigod-selection stuff and clearly gave up on it because it was proving more complicated than they anticipated, or the motivation to push it through wasn't there (as should be the case with this idea, no offense intended).

I take your word about the code. But why is it a bad idea in itself?

It's defeatist as hell, for one.  We can't agree on a fix to the problem, so let's institutionalize it?

Second, how do you decide who in a given match gets the privilege of playing the tier 1 demigods?  I can only imagine how much fighting there would be over this, how many people would just leave the game if they didn't get their way, etc.

And if the point quantity is set so low that nobody can play a 'tier 1', then you're forcibly limiting available character diversity in a game that already only has 10 total, and 5-7 that are played with any frequency.

Agreeing the problem is not necessarily the hard part. Getting GPG to give a hoot is. How often do you read about plans for a 1.4 patch? There is an body of opinion that thinks that GPG desire to do anything else is minimal or dead. A low impact patch is about as much as we might realistically have any hope of.

.

Does this happen when two people want to both play the same character but the host says "no doubles". No, the host makes the rules and people get along fine, I never see blazing rows over who plays Oak in a no doubles game.

I don't really see it like that. If there is a 3v3 match and the host chooses 7 points you can choose between 2 tier ones and a tier 3 or a tier 1 and two tier 2's, or Other combinations. If you don't like it don't select that lobby. The same way I choose not to play many Fast games or Filthy Rich Games.

What I do accept is that a host could just explain this in the title and ask people to follow the rules. Might take alot of explaining.

Ultimately, if the host doesn't want to opposing team playing all tier 1, he can tell them not to, or boot them anyways. There is no need for a system inside the lobby if the host is stern. All it would do is elliminate the host having to say it to everyone.

Whilst I think discussion and generation of new ideas is good for the game I don't see this one as being beneficial. Of the problems dg has this one isn't high on the list or even a real problem imo. I mean if players can't decide on decent dg choices/counters for a game then that's an insight into game sense more than anything (and it isn't an issue for noobs really). Certainly it shouldn't have to be decided by the game/code.

For sc2 players this would be like saying you cant pick terran on lost temple...
