Although it's fun, I think it's obvious why its a free game.

You know, you should probably tell us what you think is obvious so we can tell you if it was obvious or not.

Isn't it obvious? :D

From Rock, Paper, Shotgun:

Jim:: Yes, it’s very much in that school of Oh-This-Is-Aliens-From-A-Top-Down-Perspective
John:: But unlike Shadowgrounds and others, this is four-player co-op. And without four, it’s not really worth trying.
Jim:: And, sadly for Team 17, it makes Alien Breed Evolution look a bit stiff and uninspired. Which is a shame, because that’s a fairly entertaining game.
John:: Yes. Valve making a free game in your genre must be a bit like entering a county fair chilli cooking contest, and finding out Anthony Bourdain is participating.

Jim:: Yes. However, in conclusion, we can only take this game as evidence of showing off.
John:: Absolutely.
Jim:: Valve are no longer a game development company, but a showing off company.
John:: “We thought we’d make the best example of this genre in our spare time.”

:D

Here.

Yeah - I couldn't justify buying the game simply because its so short - 2 1/2 hours or so to complete, but it is fun.  And they've got it setup for modding and adding new content for users, so win there.  It seems like its begging for additional campaigns, which perhaps would be paid content (hopefully $1.99 to $4.99) as I'm sure, out of the X people that play it for free, a certain % of them would pay for more content.  So, its either then just showing off,  trying to increase the adoption rate of the steam client, or a marketing plan so more people will buy the dlc when it ships (if).  Valve gets some press, loses some bandwidth, and perhaps increases its player base.  Sounds like a decent move to me.

They should have made Alienswarm only free to those who have purchased something from steam

Silly n00b, you silly!

Steam wants people to GET STEAM, not reward steam users. This is just nother reason people should have steam on thier computers, and it probably will end up with either a direct revenue stream or an indirect one.

I downloaded it, and it didn't even work on my computer...

My uncle has it, and I just went and played it on his computer. Pretty cool.

They should have made Alienswarm worth 20$ like killingfloor

It's not a bad multiplayer game. I couldn't take the single player campaign for long.. the AI was rough.. I had to keep leading my group into a room just to backtrack and weld doors. If you don't have at least 3 players it's a bit underwhelming as well. I'm looking fwd: to seeing some user content.

Yeah, awesome, and when steam is integrated to windows, it'll be a great windows service.

Microsoft has already said that "Windows Marketplace" for people to sell Windows games/apps will be bundled in the upcoming Windows 8.  ;)

I though it played like crap and immediately deleted it from my computer.

It's not even worth the cost of free.
