I want a 3d OS

Why dont anyone make a 3d os? I mean, it was over 10 years ago games went 3d, and have only became better and better, however instantly everyone knew it was the future, so ID software flourished. And look at where we are today! Because someone took the plunge, daring the unknown, programming a 3d engine!

But Operative Systems have been 2d forever.

When are someone gonna take the plunge? Sure as hell wont be Microsoft, now that not even Bill Gates is with them.

Besides, Bill Gates is to old to invent. Need to be someone young, and daring.

There have been a number of interfaces that have been 3-d.  None have been succesful.

Check out Bumptop.  It sucks but sucks less than other options.

Because no one wants to walk their user account into the "virtual room"(aka 3d environment equivalent of a window) for gaming, nor do they want to have look "around" for where they left that doc they were working on. Is that it over there? I can't tell from "here", let me take even longer to get to doing what I want to do while I zoom in. 3d is a feature/tool, not an end in and of itself.

Linux has some options for that.  Although that's simply having four desktops on a cube..

It doesnt have to be like that! That is just the way its done most convenient in a 2d environment, in a 3d environment everything could be entirely different yet easier to use.

Your argument is kinda like this:

"no one wants to bump bricks for mushrooms in a 3d environment, you wouldnt see the mushroom on the other side of the block!"

Nah, games ("bumping bricks") are for fun, most people don't mind taking their time, and "bumping bricks" really doesn't change much from 2d to 3d. I have yet to hear one 3dOS idea that didn't make working with an OS (i.e. getting to the games) more of a burden.

All modern OSes are actually using graphics acceleration behind the scenes, so theoretically 3D is possible. In addition, they also have 3D cues such as drop shadows and lighting on buttons.

It's just that the 2D "desktop" metaphor really does work best for managing documents and applications. I don't really see any advantage to moving to a "true" 3D metaphor.

Well here's a couple of reasons:

1.  No 3D OS to date has ever been successful, people just don't know how to inovate anymore like they used to...
2.  It would make computers a lot more expensive since a higher demand would be put on GPU's and they are pretty expensive compared to crappy integrated cards.
3.  The cost to develope a good one would probably be insane compared to a conventional 2D OS.
4.  No one has any ideas as to what advantages a 3D OS would have...it would probably be harder to navigate since a Z-axis is used and modern mouses would need a new buton or something to use that Z-axis effectively, therefore making development costs even higher, and how would that new button be integrated into the mouse so that someone new to computers could pick it up and use it without a manual?
5.  People are stuck to the 2d OS enviroment, a change would mean more learning, just remember how pissed people were with Vista's new enviroment...imagine how pissed people would be with Windows 3D.

Hopefully that will shed some light on your question.  But then again maybe you can be the one to invent a 3D OS lol.

Edits:

6.  To take full advantage of a 3D OS new programs would need to be created and guess what that means?  More development costs.  All the default Windows programs (assuming Microsoft created this 3D OS) would need to be redone, meaning a new Internet Explorer which is probably the most important, a new Windows Media Player, a new Windows Media Center and a new everything.

I remind everyone of the UNIX OS from Jurrasic Park.

Do you really want that???

Not sure if it was true or just an urban legend but I did hear of a Doom OS years ago - you opened a file by shooting it....

I see no reason to change the way current desktop OS's are at the moment.  Vista changed some things from XP and most of them were bad.  Anyway, wouldn't it being 3D just lag up the computer?  Kind of defeats the purpose of having a good OS.

I think OS's are going to skip 3D and move into whatever comes afterwards; thought controlled computing comes to mind, pardon the pun.

Project Looking Glass made by Sun for Linux ... Looks great and all 3D

I think Compiz is based on it, although Compiz feels 3D I am not sure how 3D it is.

The wobbly windows are a lot of fun just crank up the settings and when you touch them, the will shake off the screen.

Zoom out and and watch it dance around your cube  (small minds.......)
