Another enemy is gone...

Another enemy is gone...

Bye, Bye, Jack Thompson!

A recent declaration by the Florida Bar (the top lawyers and judges) says that Jack Thompson will not be allowed to practice law in Florida for the next 10 years.

For those of you who don't know. Jack Thompson has been fighting to end video games ever since the Video Game Violence Hearings in 1994 that established the organization that families with gamers in them have a love/hate relationship with, the ESRB (Parents love, kids hate)   ;)

Thompson has tried countless times to get various video games banned, and a few times, ban video games themselves. He has never gotten his way, and has actually gotten himself in trouble with these cases. H has no reasoning or sense when he attacks video games, but he nevers gives up. Because of this, he has been declared an emeny of the games industry. I know of a few more that should be on that list (EA, Tilted Mill, and the people who decided that The Force Unleashed will not go to the PC), but let's stay on topic.

In his cases, Jack has insulted judges and juries, presented evidence that have swayed opinion towards his opponents, and done other stupid stuff. During his camapign against Bully, Jack asked the judge to play the game so he could see why Jack was opposing it. The judge found nothing wrong with the game, and even found it fun, so he threw the case out of court.

So you may be thinking, "Well he can just go to another state." The Florida Bar said that if he did that, he would not be allowed to practice law for the rest of his life. Jack grew quite angry when he heard this statement, saying "I am being punished for trying to save lives". You sir, are being punished to save lives.

So thats it. Jack Thompson is for the most part gone. Hopefully, he'll learn to stop doing what he's doing in the next 10 years. Better yet, he may kick the bucket before those 10 years are up (he's in his 60's, I think).

Bye, Jack Thompson! We won't miss you!

Jack Thompson isn't evil because he wants to ban video games, he's evil because he wants to ban anything at all.Censorship is the enemy of progress, the very barrier that the insidious "Old Guard" rely on as they keep the world in a constant state of stagnation and decay. When time brings down the scythe upon their ignorant, terrified heads the universe itself will be the better for it.

Your logic fails. By that logic, child pornography, calling for the violent overthrow of the government, yelling "fire" in a theater, etc should be allowed in the name of "progress". Bullshit. Some things are banned for a reason - it's just that video games don't belong in that catergory.

I suppose Greek society was just a race of morally bankrupt pedophiles then, right?

The United States was FOUNDED on the violent overthrow of a government.

Look, just keep one thing in mind... when you start banning things you need to ask yourself where the line is drawn. Who decides what gets banned? You? When the school board tells me that I have to participate in the pledge of allegiance in front of my class but I can't mention evolution as a possible means of creation without risking my losing my job something is really wrong. Some things are banned for a reason, too many things aren't.

It's a dangerous line and you don't get to decide how we cross it. That's for everyone to decide, not one person.

Here's an update I just read.

Jack Thompson is going to be kicked off the Florida bar permanantly. The judge who is overseeing this case thought that the 10 year ban was too merciful.  It probably was.

Jack also has to pay around $45,000 in fines, because it was revealed that he broke something like 45 out 50 laws and conditions concerning the Florida Bar.

Serves you right, Jack. An enemy is truely gone. Now, if Hillary Clinton will stop fighting video games, the gaming world will finally have peace.

I like him.

Why?

Think about it.

He's the flag waver for that sort of crusade and...

...he's incompetent, in so many ways.

What better enemy to have around?

He was trying to do a good thing, but he chose the very wrong way. Some games do not belong to hands of small children. Some games are even not good for the adults. People like JT want to prevent this to happen and I agree with their effort.

In my country we used to have a commission, that decided what films can or can not be played on TV (political reasons). Someone could say it was bad, but it has some advantages. After this commission was disbanded, a few good but a lot of trash films appeared on the screen.

The problem is where is the line. If you ban all computer games, you will have great problems. Not only you kill a huge industry, but you will also have to ban a lot of other software. E.g. Windows has Minesweeper and Solitaire. OS/2 had also some such game inside. I do not used Linux, but I used Unix for some time and there were also some little games. But I think some commission should exist. It should say at least this game is not good for children below xx etc. And such games should not be sold to people, which do not meet the criteria. Like the children and the cigarettes.

You misunderstand.

We already have a game ratings system. Stores already prohibit selling of games to those who aren't old enough based on the ratings. Granted, they're not nearly as consistent about it as they should be, but it's ultimately their responsibility.

Jack Thompson wanted to outright ban certain games.

Hillary Clinton is trying to get a law passed in New York that limits the amount of time kids can play video games, and restrict kids from even playing games that are rated M or T. WTF?!

So like, if a kid sneaks off and plays an hour longer, a mandatory implanted monitoring module which will be installed at birth alarms the police and they zap the brat with 10 000 volts. Hopefully frying the offending computer in the process. Is that what's she's thinking? Makes sense, right? Right?

:p
