Of course now Mumble you have to beat DA's score after a call like that

Actually I've been having trouble motivating myself to get started (I guess I've been playing too much SD at GGN). A decent target to shoot for should help. Also I have gotten the top score every single round except for two. One was the round that I got fastest game and the other was the one round I didn't submit in time, however even in that case the game I finished after the fact was indeed the high score of that round by a substanstial margin. ;) That was the alliance victory IIRC.

Of course if Wyndstar ever decided to go the long game route instead of fast game then the outcome would be more uncertain.

[edit] Actually I have to correct that. I did let DA have top score once when he had his breakthrough game and we were both on the A Team, but that was a one time offer. :) [/edit]

Yes, i think it is i who is in his sights for this round. I fear he may be looking to do a ZYW, and though i don't think it can be done, the 1 year win was hard enough, if anyone can manage to pull it off it is Wyndstrat.

i was trying to play my MVL game tonight, but if you'll check my character's profile, i accidentally set the difficulty level to "cakewalk"...i knew something was strange when i was the only one colonizing...and now there's a blemish on my record to boot!...playing on cakewalk is as bad as a sin (if you're good that is)!
i guess i'll try again sometime this week. :(

Yea, sometimes the AI resets to cakewalk if you Ctrl+D alot.
i didn't hit ctrl+D, i was testing testing something for "The Bringers of Light" and i didn't want to get attacked...and then i forgot to turn the AI settings back up to challenging or tough.

You mean ctrl-n don't you?
Even if it does reset, your score is calculated as though on cakewalk, but your MV profile will still list it as whatever you started out on, like tough, orbscene or whatever.

This is true. IIRC this made it's first apperance in v1.31 (the version that eliminated the morale benefit of the stockmarket).

This was initially a concern because people could play on cakewalk and get reported as suicidal. In practice I doubt this has ever been done. Cakewalk is so boring that I don't believe anyone would want to play such a game out.

Also this would definitely be covered by our blanket rule that "Every MVL player is honor bound to ensure that the effective difficulty of any game they submit is accurately represented by the games posted difficulty."

In the case of ctrl-n you can see when this happens because your home planets initial income will suddenly increase.

Also *excessive* use of ctrl-n should be covered by our rule covering "The deliberate and determined use by a Player, with full knowledge and intent, of repeatedly and excessively, exploiting bugs, quirks, or other miscellanea in a game to achieve an outcome not normally possible is hereby prohibited in the MVL."

This is of course subject to indiviual interpretation but the way I look at it using ctrl-n for 15 or 20 minutes looking for a "good" start is OK but doing so for an hour to find the "perfect" starting planet with both a precusor mine and precursor library isn't. But technically it's up to your own sense of fair play where to draw the line. I believe that although there will obviously be individual variation in the appplication of this rule, I do believe that everyone pretty much treats this in a similar manner and therefore it's not of any major advantage one way or the other.

Finally, in DSep's case of playing a different game and then forgetting to change it back for your league game is entirely different. However the above rules would still apply and a setting mistake such as this should not be submitted whereas I believe a mistake in settings that did not make much difference to the games outcome (such as blind exploration on or off) should be OK to submit as long is was an honest mistake and not intentional.

Again we all live by the honor system and while this is not a perfect system I do believe everyone in the league takes it seriously enough that to all practical purposes we're all playing the same game.

Just something we discussed at our Team C forum and that holds some similarity to the discussion above... Could the message be reinforced in the next MVL rounds whenever we have another tech speed than normal that this speed needs to be set with each game you start? Players who haven't fiddled around with tech speed settings before, could overlook that this setting is not copied from the previous game's setup.

This is a major reason why we post screenshots in the OP of each of the variations of the game (DL, DA, and TA) so that players can see exactly how the setup should look.

Players should be aware, and prepared for, that any and all settings may be radically different in any and all categories.

not when your filter blocks them :P ...it's a good thing there's one unfiltered pc in my house!

while I will not generally be posting a written description (ie long form) of a round's criteria in the OP, if a Player in the future is unable to see the images, please contact me or your team captain to ascertain the setup. I will gladly forward the requisite information to you.

it's ok. like i said, one of the PCs in my house is unfiltered, so i just looked at that one to find out the settings ;)

Absolutely! I just wanted to clarify that one of these settings (Tech speed) is set back to 'normal' whenever you start a new game, while the other settings are by default in their previous state.

Hmm...

I did not know that. Is this true for DA, ToA or both?

However, DL retains all previous settings, even Tech Speed.
It's deinitely true for DA. It's been that way for along time, and always been really annoying.

It's also true for TA, at least for beta 1.91 (didn't update to the later betas yet).

Having a real problem with suicidal TA using the Krynn. Seems they don't like my huge influence, and gang up on me. Have to try a different tactic.

I think the main reason why many people chose invasion over spores this round is the economy. Personally, I found Yor with a starting soldiering bonus of +60 do quite a nice job. In the end, I lost about 300-400 troops against a full 16b planet - admittedly, that was peaceloving treehugging spongiform Torians, but still. You get full production instead of a depleted toxic world and a larger starting population as well.

Dang, the Torians in my games are always Warlords. If I can't make peace with them, it's always a long slugfest between the two of us.
