Luck

Does selecting Luck as one of the race config bonuses actually do anything?  I know in the past, it used to make it more likely for defections to go your way, or for surrenders to go your way, but it seems to me that it no longer makes any difference in the game, especially in TA.

It shows itself (most) in your defense rolls during space combat, AFAIK.

My understanding is that it changes the random system by lowering the minimum possible rolls. That actually has a very substantial impact.

If you look at a 6 sided die, you can roll 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. The average roll is 3.5. If you suddenly can't roll 1, the average roll is now 4. Pretty nice, eh?

I find it more sigificant than that. The game allows a zero roll. If you have a 25% luck abliity and a ship with a defence of 4, you will always roll a 1.25 - 4 instead of 0-4. What that means is you will never loose to a ship with less than 1.25 attack. With a defence of 99, it would be 25-99. Pretty big deal!

I was thinking for some reason that it applied to attack as well. Is that not correct?

I've also noticed things like random bonuses (I once randomly aquired THREE Ranger-class vessels that were far beyond the capabilities of anybody else in my game, including my own, over the course of a few consecutive turns) happen a lot more often if you have the Luck bonus.

And what is the effect of 50% luck? (25% from ability plus 25% from political party)

The effect is the same. Just use 50% in the math instead of 25%.

At some point I think we must create a race with 100% luck, and no other abilities, just to see how unbalancing it is. Given some of the seeming effects of 25% Luck, 100% would just be godawful - {G}.

Good gawd. That's ridiculous.

For extra fun, play with the Altarian tech tree. I wonder if 110% luck would crash the game, what with the minimum roll being higher than the maximum roll.

That made my head hurt.

By the end of the game, I routinely get 3-5 "Lucky Rangers" every time I choose lucky as my pick. I also use Universalists a lot and they have Luck as one of their boosts. These "rangers" aren't the obscenely powerful ones you get maybe once every 10 games, they're a lot weaker, but they're still a 150-hp, 25-attack, 25-defense ship at a time when your opponents are trying to fight you with Tiny-class ships.

This, combined with the constant stream of free techs that "Creative" gives you, is a recipe for a very strong race.

What I'm more interested in is, what does Bravery do? They say it can make a difference in a close land battle but... it's hard to see the kind of measurable results that Creative and Lucky give you.

How long do games typically last? I have, like 20 of those?

Is the other ship the "Precursor Ranger"? I have one of those too.

I am *so* screwed next game -

Personally I do select 'luck' as a bonus ability almost every game, since I think it's unbelievably strong for only 1 ability point cost (at least in DL).

I think the (ranger class) starships you receive due to your luck abilities are named something like "lucky ranger", so you can check the effect...

In DA I find it gives a LOT more anomalies near your homeworld in the very beginning.

I think Bravery/Courage adds to your planetary defense bonus, like gives you a boost to your advantage

I always pick luck when I only have 1 point left
