Planet quality?

Is there any info I should be looking at to know what a planet will excel at? Outside of bonus tiles I've noticed that I have say, 2 class 4 planets and build the same exact structures on them, and we'll assume that neither has bonus tiles. Now, one ends up with 40 military production and another has 26, both receiving their social production bonus.

Obviously that one getting 40 production is/was better off at being a production planet. The other one? I don't know, could it excelled at something differently? Like trade or research? Only reason I bring this up is because it'd help to know where to look to be maximizing each planets potential.

All things being equal, the planet that got 40 production likely has a moon. That'll give an additional production bonus. Planets with rings give extra research.  :)

Also check if one of them perhaps receives production from asteroids.

...ethical choice when colonizing as well may have a factor.

Thanks for the responses. How do I check if there's a moon on the planet? I can't say I've ever recognized them. Didn't know about the rings on the planet being better for research, that'll help out.

I never find asteroids except for the ones that start by everyones home planet. Is it possible to blow up the planets that can't be colonized to make asteroids? I think I read a thread about people talking about it and I know events that do it.

I almost always pick neutral. Never thought about specializing planets based off those choices but it makes sense now that it's been mentioned.

If you zoom in to the planet you can see if there are rings or moons.

Asteroids can be made in TA by blowing up a system with a Terror Star. Each planet becomes an asteroid.

You can either zoom way in to see if it's got a moon or from the colony screne got to Details - it'll show you a pretty picture of the planet, it's primary & what-ever maybe orbiting it, be they rings, a moon or ships. It'd be nice if the planetary thumbnail on the main colony screen would show the moon/rings. I prefix all my colony names with [r] or [m] so I can differentiate them in the Colony Manager or when I'm flipping through colonies on the build screen. Maybe not the most useful, but I'm weird that way.

If you research TerrorStars & actually build on & it ever gets to where it should, then it will absolutely pulverize any planets there into asteroids. I've not actually been able to use one offensively, but I've had a couple cruising the "Home Sector" zapping useless systems into cash (I play with Rare colonizable & Uncommon planets in general).

Unless they've finally fixed it in TA, for a long time, rings made no difference to research bonuses.

You could have picked an ethical event choice screen that would increase that planet's production level.

Other things to know about Planet Quality

Lower class worlds have a growth limit that they will not grow beyond. For example, a Class 3 world has a limit of 1.32Billion

Everything Class 11 and higher receives a Morale Bonus for being a high quality planet. This is a flat bonus making it very powerful.

Only worlds higher than I believe Class 6 can have bonus tiles on them. You will not see tiles on worlds lower than that, even if you have the Neutral Alignment/Terraforming Techs that instantly upgrades them.

As for specialization: Look to whatever bonus tiles may be present and let that serve as a guide to what should be built. A world with a 300% manufacturing tile would be better served by a factory than a lab. Things like that.

Can you clarify that statement for me? Are you refering to bonus tiles as in % upgrades such as a precursor mine, or just extra tiles such as those that are terraformed?

It seems like I have definatly seen the laster on worlds under class 6. In fact, I think it has been quite some time since I've colonized a planet under 6 that couldn't be terraformed at least back up there. I'm pretty sure I've seen low quality planets with mines and such as well. Thus my confusion.

Clarification:

Terraforming Tile: The Yellow, Orange, or Red tiles that require a tech to be available to you

Bonus Tile: A tile that has an icon on it such as the 100% Manufacturing Bonus

Under the Neutral Alignment, once Xeno Ethics has been researched, all existing terraforming tiles are automatically upgraded provided you have the requisite technology (ie all Yellow Soil Enhancement tiles would be upgraded once you research Soil Enhancement)

Any low-PQ world you colonize will not have any bonus tiles on it. That is, if you colonize a Class 2 world, it will most definitely not have a bonus tile. I believe once its starting PQ reaches 6 (though it could possibly be 5) that there is a chance it will have bonus tiles.

Now later in the game, assuming you went Neutral or have built the Orbital Transformer Wonder, and you colonized a Class 1 world, all its terraforming tiles would instantly be upgraded, making it a possible Class 10-20. But its BASE PQ is still "1" and so it will still not have any bonus tiles.

While at the colony management screen, you can press the 'details' button (near the 'turn' button) to get more information about the planet. Bonuses from starbases, bonuses from asteroids, and planet bonuses can all be found here. Please note the planet bonuses tend to be a mix of both the inate planet bonuses (including ethical events) and bonuses from strutures.
