Because GalcivII doesn't run on Windows Vista, I've tried to reinstall it on Windows XP Home (on the same computer). Because I had uninstalled it previous I had to download it again (or, could I find the downloaded files anywhere?). But now, if I'm starting the game, I get a message box which says "The product appears to be validated but the serial number or the machine SID don't match.". What can I do to run the game on XP again? The serial number is ok, I updated it and compared it with my number. Thanks in advance.

Simply delete the file sig.bin located in the game's directory (normally C:\Program Files\Stardock\Totalgaming\GalCiv2), then run the game and input your email/serial reactivate it. The sig.bin file contains the activation information, which is keyed to the windows installation it was created on, and it may not be removed in an uninstall.
