Whoa

That's quite an event...

I was playing in a large galaxy on Normal level, and was doing pretty well, easily on my way to a cultural victory.

One of the races (I forget which) was cornered in the SE part of the galaxy, they had four star systems with a total of five planets colonized. They were no threat, so I left them alone.

Suddenly an event happens. They find a precursor technology that gives every UNCOLONIZED planet in a 3 parsec radius a base quality of 13.

What did this mean? That the AI who up to that point had five planets, now suddenly found himself with FIFTEEN extra class 13 planets...

Now THAT is an event!

Yeah this event generally causes a lot of people to get frustrated. Normally the AI finds it tougher than the human to fully exploit this event, so the player snatches a large number of planets - bear in mind that all the class 0 planets become PQ 13!!! thats a lot of planets up for grabs.

I only had it happen twice and both times I was already in the lead so it wasn't a major effect.... but it can seriously destabilise any galactic balance that might have been in place prior to it!

I've heard of the same problem witht he "ancient precursor artefact" event that gives one races a mall, but exponentially increasing bonus. Crush them fast or they become unbeatable. IMO thatevent could be improved by:

1) limiting it to minor races
2) Capping the bonus (creating a funtional limit on how much you can learn from 1 artefact).

as far as the terraformer goes, it might be better if once again the bonus was always focused on a minor race or sparesly populated area. This would encourage a "gold rush" where every race tries to capture as many of the new worlds as possible.

It looks to me that a gold rush is exaclty the point of those events. The only problem I see is that the AI need to take advantage of it better: buying colonyships with buffed up engines asap.

Does that event make all planets (even the ones that were not habitable to begin with ) habitable, or only one that hadn't been colonized yet (ie: habitable, but not colonized)?

It made only the PQ 0 ones change when it happened to me. All other colonised planets (and presumably uncolonised but higher than PQ 0) remain the same.

I had one where they all went to PQ9 and one where they went to 13. Both times I grabbed all but one or two of them...... none of them had any special resources on, which I suppose is only to be expected.
