Option to save design as a hull?

Is there a way to save a design as a hull so you could call up that design install various components on it then give it a new name?

If I call up a hull now which is really a ship design it overwrites that ship design and upgrades all my ships in game.

It would be nice to be able to save a hull design without components as a hull.

What is the key to ship design ....miniturzation?

You can save a hull with no components on it.

When you want to build a ship using that hull, select it to upgrade, put components on it, and then save it as a new name.

My understanding is that miniturization adds to the space units that are available for that class size. The construction research line, large-scale buildings, for instance, adds new ship sizes. I also noticed that some hull shapes opened after some of the factory techs opened up.
