Tactical Battles? Who needs them

Ok; Heres a query for you all.

What game, that the majority of us here absolutely love, is - 4X, Turn-Based and Lacks tactical battles. In fact, it lacks anything close even to what GC2 has.

The answer? Civilization. I don't see you complaining about Civ4 not having Total War-esque battles. I think you've lost sight of what Galactic Civilizations 2 is. It ISN'T a Master of Orion 2 Clone. It ISN'T the long wished for "True" Master of Orion 3. It's Galactic Civilizations. It's a different game that does it's own thing, its own way.

Please, PLEASE stop with the "GC2 Needs [insert moo2 feature here]". They aren't the same game. I'd rather see "Repeatable GC2 bug" so that the game issues can be weaned out to provide us with more mean, lean GC2. Actually, Could the dev's make a sticky called "STICKY: Talk about what moo2 features you want"?. Hmph.

Also, MoO3 wasn't exactly tactical either. It was basically similar in all intents and purposes during combat to GC2. You just got to click where to go to and choose targets. Sort of.

But to re-iterate -GC2 doesn't need tactical combat. It needs polished. Maybe when we hear some teasers about an expansion, it would be time to start pushing for huge new features like that. Until then? Bleh. I wouldn't say no to heroes however.

Is this meant to stir up another debate on tactical combat? I don't think a thread asking people to not talk about something will have the intended effect hehe.

Negative. A semi-rant because I'm fed up with them and would rather see people posting proper bug reports instead of yet another "add x feature from moo2" thread. Didn't mean it as a debate or anything.

it's gonna end up that way. Personally i wouldnt mind tactical battles, but i know when to shut up about it, other's don't, and i'm afraid this will just stir the pot again... oh wait, it just did... HEH...

Tactical battles are only interesting if either the entire focus of game is on the combat, or if the number of total fights over the course of a game is relatively low

Otherwise they tend to bog down the play horrendously

I know some games have attempted to streamline tac combat, but I've yet to see one that has meaningful AI in tac combat, it's just too open to exploitation by human intellect...

I still want tactical battles.

To use the ships you made - that would be awesome.

I would like tactical battles IF the auto-battle AI was as good as the best human players. But I don't see that as possible without immense effort.

that's certainly true

HEY! the ACTUAL MOO3 is playable if you mod it out. I made a ton of mods for MOO3 and actually enjoyed quite a few games of it. Granted it had ALOT of problems, but there were some high points to it as well. It wasn't all bad

it would be awesome but look at the total war series, especially rome: soon after start you fight several battles per turn, all almost the same and a disastrous AI ...and its all about the tactical fight there

i hope SD devotes their time to something else, not tactical battles

Like I said in a previous thread, tactical battles would be good to have for player vs. player battles if Stardock decides to do a multiplayer expansion pack.

So...you're lazy?

I know about MoO3 being playable, I was really into it at one point and wrote a few econemy articles on various fansites (Only busy one though was Moo3.at). I agree though, the games focus isn't combat and trying to push tactical combat upon it would change it a lot.

Man i can say you that 10 days ago there was a poll about who wanted tactical battles and if i'm not wrong there was nearly 50 against tactical combat and 5 or 6 for.So it's a bit unpopular its introduction

I know a few excellent Naval Aviators. Pricey but you will know what to compare the best too. Or for a much lower amount I could probably scrape up a couple Air Force pilots. Bear in mind you get what you pay for though.
