Key to good start?

For me, i find the first minor civilization i can. Trade everything for everything except for weapon paths i will not follow. Even if it cost me money it is much cheaper then buying from a major civ. Oncew you get a tech lead, sell are your stuff to the minor and conquer! a 15+ PQ for ya Well that is what i do at the start, how about you?

I prefer to wait a while before taking advantage of the minor races. Here's how I do it:

Wait until a minor race is in a losing war with one of the other majors. By this time, I should have a few trade goods and a decent tech stockpile. I trade my trade goods and whatever tech for as much of their tech/money/influence as I can get, and as valuable as trade goods are, I usually get a pretty good haul out of it. Then I either turn around and take them out myself or just let the major finish the job. Last night I had a minor sharing a star system with me; I used this method to get Planetary Invasion from them and used to it buy a transport in the neighboring planet, slipped it right past the huge Terran fleet keeping them from building any new ships and stole the planet. Yes, I felt a little bit guilty about it -- but not that much.
