What happens to leftover resources?

If a planet is fully developed, i.e. in the planet view no more farms etc. can be built, what happens to resources that are not used?

1. are they used in the same category on other planets?
2. are they used on the same planed in another category?
3. are they wasted?

I think I read in the forum that if you're not building anything in the planet then the social production of that planet should be between parenthesis which means it is its production potential and is not actually being deducted from your social spending (in other words, that would be the planet production if something was being built).

Maybe someone can confirm this?

If you keep reserching industral theroy and xeno econmics and other planet based techs you will find that you are almost always building or upgrageing something on your planets.

However, if you get in a situation were several of your planets are not building and you want to keep the social spending up for your empire. (To keep the other planets building stuff) you can then go to the top of the planet screen and "Focuse" the spending of the individual planet on either reserch or military. Then the plnet in question will take a % of the social spending being alocated buy the empire and put it into the focused area.

If you have no planets building anything you can turn socail spending all the way down in the domestic policy window and spend everything on military or reserch.

No, that's what it says in the manual but it's not true, it only applies to military production

My understanding (which could easily be incorrect) is that the extra production gets "wasted". However, you doesn't cost you anything.

This is one of the biggest differences betweeen other 4X games and it took me a while to wrap my head around it. If you have 20 Social Production on a given planet, if you are using that production it costs you 20 credits (1 credit per production point) to fund that production. If you aren't producing anything then it costs you 0 credits.

So while you might consider the 20 Social Production going to waste, I consider it more that the planet is not draining my economy if it's not producing anything.

Hopefully that makes sense

Well, have you checked your treasury and the economic screen before running the turn and after it has run? You will see that you are wasting BC. It is easy to check at the start of the game, with an empty queue and setting 100% spending on 100% social production
