When I read that you could desing your own ships, I thought that there would be three diferent ways that this could be:
1.You have the base ship with different slots, so you could change the shields, weapons, engine, etc but not the ship desing
2.You start with a basic model, and you can change the different parts of the ship without slots but being limited by the size of the ship.
3.More of a building block approche, so if you have cargo blocks you can place them at the back and weapons around it, or make the ship very long, with a sting of cannons, like a firing wall.
The last one would probably be complicated for pricing the ships, but would allow for a great multitude of ships, and some "super" ships, as some poeple seem to want.
Also I think that there should not be any discrimination in the ship types. I would like to be able to build supply ships that can easily defend (from minor/small attacks) themselves, and not have to have an escort all the time.
for the micromanagers there could also be a crew list with the techs, civilians, gunners, etc, and durring battles when the ship is seriously damaged some of them die, giving more sence to the decreased effectiveness of the ship. (thought it makes sence that a damaged ship does not work as well)
