How to change the names of ship design files?

Title question.

Would like to get rid of the long string of numbers/letters appended to each file name and to keep my ship design directory neat and tidy with my own file naming conventions, but changing file names seems to disassociate the .objgfxcfg, .png, and .ship files.

Mmm, I don't think you can rename ship design files, if I'm right that long string of characters is a sort of check system with the details of your design (date of creation, version and, of course, pointing system that link together the 3 files), changing that means the game can't put together the 3 parts and render the design.

Sorry for the necroposting, however I found that is actually possible to eliminate the ID code the game attaches to the name of your custom designs.

You need to open the console and use the command shortshipnames, this will eliminate the code (however this also made possible to overwrite your designs - for instance, if you create a ship and call it "Battleship Alpha", then create a second ship and give it the same name the new ship deletes and replaces the first one).
