Windows 7

I've just lost my hard drive and decided that, while I'm in the process of getting a new drive, I might as well upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. 

I know there was an issue some people were having with the 64-bit version, so I was just curious to see how many people in the modding community are running Windows 7.  If so, which version, and have you had any problems?

While I've just had my Windows 7 64 laptop for a couple of months, Sins runs better than ever on it (certainly slaughters Vista). The main consideration will probably be your RAM though, but if it is at least 4GB (and it should if you are getting 64) you should be okay. Was there a specific area you heard people had problems with?

I am also having windows 7 64 bit on my new laptop without any issues with sins.

There was thread over in the technical forum that spanned from last spring to present.  Apparently, some of them still can't get it to work.

Regarding memory, my plans were either 4gb or 6gb.  This whole situation is really an unplanned upgrade, so I'd rather not shell out the cash for a 4gb stick of ddr3 RAM.  But I'm interested in know how much of a difference people notice in practical situations.

ive got 7 on my normal pc playing sins with no problem

the only thing thats different from my buddys sins (hes using xp) is the left bar where the planets and fleets are placed

he hase there a real dark bar, i see behind the icons the normal screen

Win 7 here as well. No prob with SINS. When they came out there were some driver problems but now all companies caught up and fixed them.

At least 4 things I'm using.....

As to compare with XP or other OS. U need to have both installed on same rig to really see the difference. If there is that is....

Thanks so much for the replies!  Unfortunately, an SSD is out of the question for the moment.  As this is an unplanned upgrade, I'm trying to get the best possible while not breaking the bank.  With that said, I'm more than doubling my hard drive efficiency and speed, and I plan on adding an SSD in the future, hopefully when the prices go down and the storage space goes up.  I was definitely tempted, though.

32 bit, and its running like a purring kitty with the sins optimisation mod ( TSOP )

No problems here.  Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit, 8gb ram.  You'll definitely want to turn aero off though if u dont have a lot of ram.

I migrated from XP to Win7 64-bit and for the first time ever I am actually pleased with a Microsoft product. So far I have had zero issues, except with finding drivers for some of my older peripherals. Modding-wise, I encountered no issues so far.

This doesn't apply to Sins, but for games such as Fallout 3 which run mods requiring script hooks or extenders you want to install them away from the default Program Files (and Program Files (x86) on the 64bit version) folder. Because of the built in execution protection such mods requiring outside script extensions will not work. Just a heads up.

I am impressed with Win 7 64 bit on my new system. Was skeptical at first, but after a few months i have had no issues at all. I am stuck with Vista for my older laptop, because it is proprietary (came pre-installed), and cant be arsed to upgrade it. Win 7 smokes Vista in almost every aspect.

Vista is almost equal to, or worse fail than millennium. Then again vista doesnt blue screen 2 weeks after a fresh install :/

stress I rate v****ta equal or WORSE than ms-dos 4.00, and M.E. as just better than ms-dos 4.00 due to the totally broken compatability with programs (on vista the programs MUST start at the first byte, but ALL OTHER windows versions (even win95a, win98, win me, win2k, winxp, winnt 3.51, winnt 4.0, AND windows 7) honour the start at execution point that is built into the exe file structure( admitedly this can be taken over by virii so is not failsafe, but neither is the REFUSE to start other than the start of the file as it would be possible for virii to append themselves to the start of the file))
