Population Growth Rate

Greetings

I am new to Galactic Civilization. I know, I am late to the game (by several years) but my Pong game finally died and I needed to find something new. I use to play MOO II and I am noticing the similarities between the games.

I remember in MOO II I use to be able to see what the population growth rate was for a planet; can I view that in Gal Civ II?

I also remember you use to be able to increase the population growth rate by placing all your workers into farming. Is there a way to do that in Gal Civ II? The reason I ask is because when I colonize a planet it takes a long time for the population to increase on its own. Mars has only increase in pop by about .4 over a couple of dozen turns.

I was trying not to freighter people to new colonies so I am looking for the best methods to increase population quickly.

Population growth is tied to both your population growth bonus, and more importantly your moral. If moral is very low, your population won't grow, and if you get it up to 100% for that planet it can double growth, or more. Read the GalCiv Wiki Population Entry for the full number set.

In short, the best way to increase population faster is to have high morale. AT 100% you get double the growth rate, at 75% its something like 1.5 x normal rate and at 41% its normal. Below 41% morale theres no growth and below 21% you lose population. This rate is per planet. The Torian superability gives a much higher growth rate for 100% approval. But you'd have to stay at that level. Keep an eye on those thresholds.

Remeber that the growth rate is based partly on the current population, so the more people you have the faster they will increase in numbers.

You can build fertility clinics (I always do on newly conquored worlds) butthats beyond the colony rush phase.

Then theres the bonuses you get just from researching Fertility Acceleration and ummm the other one thats with it. The first one is not all that hard to get early. Somewhere around 6-7 weeks, depending on your sliders and research ability.

Lastly, you can take population growth as a bonus in the galaxy set up before you start a game.

one thing to remember though is that in GC2 high populations on a planet are not very desirable because you get a big approval penalty from too high populations, thus you can't set tax rate as high to keep your people happy.

while in MoO2 a higher population effectivly means more production- and researchcapability, in GC2 your population only generates money, but not in a linear way...taxes are calculated from the square root of your population

however high populationgrowth is still important in the beginning of the game, because that's what gets your economy running, therefore you can build recruiting centers or get other techs to increase it.

when your empire is expanding fast in the middle of the game due to conquering planets it's also good to have aphrodisiac which increases popgrowth by 50%, this will make your newly aquired planets harder to conquer and will also boost your economy

DOH !! I missed that one.

You only need to start worring about higher populations when you get above, say 11 billion. Depends of course on what you are trying to set taxes on and what kind of morale boosts you have. But generally with just the built in bonuses from researching the morale techs and maybe a trade good you should be comfortable with about 11 billion. Higher than that you'd want more trade goods and a yellow resource so taxes won't have to drop.

Since were just talking about growth rate, there is no reason whatsoever to do what you can, or want, to get to a higher population faster. Whatever that population max is for you, it is beneficial for you to get there faster.
