While trying to impress a friend with my access to the beta, he made a pointed observation that struck me.
"That's the Rook? Why is he so small?"
I agree with that. Playing as the rook, he does look small and unimpressive. Now, looking back, everything in the intro and screenshots looks... on a grander scale. More majestic, more monumental. Watching the Rook franticly waddle around in game is a little disappointing. I don't even want to get started on the Giants.
Looking closer at those screenshots, I notice that everything is the same size as it is in game, but they arent in isometric view. The shots are from dramatic angles, and its much more impressive. Coupled with that, when playing as Rook, I often have trouble targeting things right next to me. Such as Erebus. This is a very bad thing sometimes.
So here's my proposed solution. This might also help differentiate more between Assassins from Generals.
Give Assassins a different camera mode. Closer up, locked on their character, rotatable for easy targeting. After all, most RPGs have 3rd person, over the shoulder perspectives, right? So use something similar to World of Warcraft's. It would immerse Assassin players more fully into the action, and give them a better view of the the destruction they cause.
That said, heres the holes I can poke in my own idea
- Ground area targeting abilities, such as Torch Bearer's frozen rain, would be hard to place.
- Regulus's Snipe is very problematic, due to its range.
- Assassins may get lost on large maps. Minimap might help.
- Assassins would not have a view of the entire battle, and may not know where they are needed most. Minimap might help.
- Fog of War might look weird.
What do you guys think? Needs tweaking? Bad solution, but valid problem? Fine the way it is?
