It depends. It is technically a fruit, but in 1893 the US Supreme Court ruled that while physiologically it is a fruit, by use it is and can be considered a vegetable.

And squash are fruit, and yams (sweet potatoes) are roots, and potatoes are . . . tubers . . . something else entirely.

Let's see, for the anal, who put an actual vegetable?

Green beans. That's the only technical, in the true-sense-of-the-word vegetable.

so there. I can call my tomato a vegetable if everyone else can call theirs vegetables.

And at least I've got a Supreme Court ruling backing me up, unlike the rest of you.

This is borrowed from Wikipedia: I hope this will quell the arguments....

Fruit, Vegetable

Since “vegetable” is not a botanical term, there is no contradiction in referring to a plant part as a fruit while also being considered a vegetable (see diagram below). Given this general rule of thumb, vegetables can include leaves (lettuce), stems (asparagus), roots (carrots), flowers (broccoli), bulbs (garlic), seeds (peas and beans) and botanical fruits such as cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, and capsicums. Botanically, fruits are reproductive organs (ripened ovaries containing one or many seeds), while vegetables are vegetative organs which sustain the plant.
